Bob Curtin won’t return as head coach of the St. Andrews University football program after three seasons at the helm.
The school continues to search for a new head coach after Curtin stepped down last month. St. Andrews, the only NAIA football program in North Carolina, did not win a game in 2023 or 2024.
“During his tenure, Curtin worked tirelessly to guide the program through challenging seasons, emphasizing resilience, and player development,” the school wrote in a December release. “While the team faced hurdles in terms of wins, Curtin’s leadership brought notable changes and established a foundation for future growth. His dedication to fostering teamwork and competitive spirit within the program is deeply appreciated.”
St. Andrews, located in Laurinburg, has fielded a football team since 2017. That debut squad finished 2-8, winning for the first time in its home opener against Cincinnati Christian, a 48-25 triumph.
SAU won its season opener at Edward Waters the following season. But the Knights finished 2018 with a 1-8 mark.
The next two years brought steps forward, with the Knights going 4-6 in 2019, including a 4-1 conference mark, and 3-3 during the spring 2021 COVID season. But the program has struggled since then, winning just three games. The most recent victory was a 27-26 triumph over Union at home on Oct. 8, 2022.
“St. Andrews remains committed to the continued growth and success of its football program and wishes Coach Curtin the best in his future endeavors,” the school posted on its Web site last month.
