At last a breakthrough! After seeing a fourth-quarter lead evaporate at No. 9 Rhode Island and a game-winning drive stall in the red zone in the final seconds against Furman, Campbell football enjoyed the sweet taste of victory Saturday night.
And it was one to savor – a 50-48 double-overtime feast that saw the Camels flirt with disaster at the end of regulation once again, only to rebound in extra time.
Some highlights from the final stretch, in a game that featured five lead changes, four ties and a lot of heart-in-your-throat moments:
- Campbell tied the game 28-28 late in the fourth quarter on a 77-yard pass play from Kamden Sixkiller to Randall King (a potent combination all night long).
- DeVonyae Pettis gave the ball back to the Campbell near midfield with less than two minutes to play, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Ebenezer Bedada.
- After a 33-yard dash by Mike Chandler II, Sixkiller paid off the takeaway, finding King for another TD to put the Camels ahead 35-28 with 1:15 remaining
- Undeterred, Bryant went 75 yards to deadlock the game 35-35, scoring on a 35-yard Brennan Myer-to-Aldrich Doe pass play with six ticks left
- Bryant scored first in overtime to go ahead 42-35, forcing Campbell to answer. The Camels responded when King caught a short TD pass from Mike Chandler II. Alex Crabb’s sixth PAT of the night sent the contest into a second OT.
- Campbell had possession first, finding the end zone on Sixkiller’s 7-yard TD pass to Dawson Adams-Grenier. The Camels went for two, converting on a rush by Naieem Kearney.
- Bryant answered – of course they did; nothing has been easy for Campbell this season – but the Camels stiffened on the Bulldogs’ two-point play. Campbell batted down a pass, and the celebration was on in Buies Creek.
The win snaps a seven-game losing skid and lifts Campbell to 1-3 on the season, 1-1 in CAA play. It was the Camels’ first victory since beating North Carolina A&T 21-7 last Oct. 26.
“We’ve talked about persistence, and I don’t know if there is a game that better describes persistence than that one right there,” Campbell coach Braxton Harris said. “We had to overcome some adversity, some of our own adversity … I’m excited for our players. I’m excited for our coaches. Starting off 0-3 ain’t fun for anybody.”
