Caleb Robles made frequent trips to the end zone, Travis Burton lived in the backfield and Guilford football recorded a monster 55-0 win at Gallaudet on Saturday afternoon for its first conference win of the season.
Robles, the Quakers quarterback, rushed for 144 yards on 19 carries and scored four first-half touchdowns in the rout at the Washington, DC school. He also threw for 173 yards and a score, accounting for 317 of Guilford’s 558 yards of total offense.
Meanwhile, Burton earned 3.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles-for-loss from his linebacker spot. Burton has since been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Guilford improved to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in ODAC play. Gallaudet fell to 1-3, 1-2. The Quakers pitched the largest shutout in the state this season at any level.
Robles Gets Guilford Rolling
The first half box score looks like the Caleb Robles show. The sophomore from Wilmington (New Hanover HS) found the end zone on runs of 3, 51, 3 and 9 yards to put the Quakers up 28-0. Gallaudet had no answer.
A 50-yard Luke Hyatt-to-Parker-DeHart touchdown pass completed the scoring, giving Guilford a comfortable 35-0 lead at the break.
Guilford spread the wealth in the second half. Josh Campbell found the end zone on a 1-yard run. Robles threw a 7-yard TD pass to Camer Campbell early in the fourth quarter. Lucas Smith completed the scoring with a 1-yard plunge.
Guilford rushed for an even 300 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. Malik Woodard added 83 rushing yards to the Guilford ledger. Evan Sullivan finished with 40. Camer Campbell caught seven passes for 78 total yards.
Quakers Defense Turns Up the Heat
The Quakers defense held Gallaudet to 130 total yards, earning eight total sacks and 12 TFLs.
Burton, a sophomore from Pikeville (C.B. Aycock HS), led the way with 12 stops. His sack total equaled his season’s best against Greensboro in the opener. Only eight players in D3 football have recorded at least 3.5 sacks in a game this season, per Guilford sports information, and Burton is the only one to achieve that feat twice.
Burton has 8.5 sacks for the season. He is in the top five of D3 football nationally for sacks and TFLs per game.
Nick Iannone, who has had games with 24 and 19 tackles earlier in the season, finished with 10 stops against Gallaudet, which just joined the ODAC for football. Iannone recorded 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles-for-loss.
Jonathan Brown picked off two passes. Aden Reece recovered a fumble. Asher Frisbee converted on all seven PAT attempts.
What’s Next for Guilford Football?
Guilford football will play its next two games at home, hosting Shenandoah on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Oct. 18. Both games kick off at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on FloCollege.
The Quakers will look to build on the momentum earned in Saturday’s 55-0 win at Gallaudet against stiffer competition.
