Duke looks for in-state sweep; NC State aims for 5th-straight win over UNC; App State eyes bowl berth

What better way to savor the last of your Thanksgiving leftovers – and bemoan all that money you spent on Black Friday – than by watching the final Saturday of the regular season in North Carolina college football.

Yes, friends, we’ve reached the end of the line for the 2025 regular season in our state. Only our seven Division I FBS teams are still standing. No FCS or Division III squads from North Carolina made the playoffs. Our two D2 playoff qualifiers – Wingate and Johnson C. Smith – both lost their openers last Saturday (Wingate in an absolute heartbreaker).

The Week 14 North Carolina college football slate features the final games of the ACC “Big Four” round robin – Duke hosting Wake Forest and NC State welcoming archrival North Carolina.

Appalachian State will battle for a sixth win and bowl eligibility in its home finale against Arkansas State. East Carolina travels to Florida Atlantic aiming for an eighth win, while Charlotte will look to spoil Tulane’s regular season home finale and snag what would be on the biggest upsets of the year.

As it stands heading into the weekend Wake Forest (8-3), East Carolina (7-4), Duke (6-5) and NC State (6-5) have reached the magical six-win plateau to establish bowl eligibility. Only App State can join them there this week if they win.

There is an outside shot UNC could be invited to a bowl under certain conditions if it beats NC State on Saturday night to improve to 5-7. If not enough six-win teams qualify, the Tar Heels could be in line due to having a solid academic resume.

East Carolina (7-4, 5-2) at Florida Atlantic (4-7, 3-4)

The Pirates gave up a season-high 58 points in last week’s whitewashing at UTSA and saw a four-game win streak come to an end. It felt like a big step back for a program that had been on a roll on both sides of the ball.

Both the Pirates and Owls come into Saturday afternoon’s matchup with high-powered offenses overall. ECU’s averages 460.4 yards per game (16th in FBS), while FAU’s tallies 455.3 per contest (20th in FBS). The Pirates have a more a balanced attack, while Florida Atlantic relies mostly on its aerial game (300+ yards per game).

This may be a contest where East Carolina’s defense can feast on takeaways. FAU is nearly last in the nation in turnover margin (minus-17). Owls quarterback Caden Veltkamp has thrown for 3,469 yards and 24 TDs, but he’s also been picked off 15 times. ECU counters with QB Katin Houser, who has compiled 3,042 yards on the year, with 17 passing TDs and only 6 INTs.

An East Carolina win on Saturday feels like a necessity to wash away the bad taste from last weekend and to position an eight-win Pirates team for a solid bowl berth.

Arkansas State (5-6, 4-3) at Appalachian State (5-6, 2-5)

2:30 p.m. | ESPN+

App State earned a much-needed win this past Saturday against Marshall, snapping a four-game losing skid, beating one of the school’s bigger Sun Belt East rivals and keeping bowl hopes alive.

Punter Ian Ratliff earned Sun Belt weekly player honors after averaging 47.7 yards on six kicks, including a 70-yarder that went to the Marshall 1. Freshman running back Jaquari Lewis had a breakout game, recording a season-high 175 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.

Appalachian State has lost only once to Arkansas State in five meetings as FBS foes – a 40-27 defeat in 2015. The last meeting was a 48-14 App State romp in 2021. The Mountaineers have only missed a bowl in two of their 10 years since moving up to FBS, including 2024. Arkansas State also is seeking its sixth win of the season.

Wake Forest (8-3, 4-3) at Duke (6-5, 5-2)

3:30 p.m. | ACC Network

Duke has a chance to win the mythical Big Four championship on Saturday, completing a 2025 sweep of the Demon Deacons, NC State and North Carolina. The Blue Devils did this last season, too, meaning coach Manny Diaz will put an unbeaten (5-0) record on the line against the Big Four.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, has the opportunity to build on what has already been a wildly overachieving first season under coach Jake Dickert. The Deacs lost to NC State in September but beat UNC two weeks ago.

The Blue Devils are still buzzing after their win over the Heels (32-25) on Saturday. Duke executed one of the top plays of the year, a fake field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter that saw kicker Todd Pelino completely fool the defense and rush 26 yards to the Tar Heels’ 1. Anderson Castle scored what would be the winning points on the next snap.

Wake Forest knocked off new FBS member Delaware on Saturday, with quarterback Robby Ashford throwing three touchdown passes and finishing with 292 yards. Carlos Hernandez caught five balls, picking up 197 yards and scoring twice.

Charlotte (1-10, 0-7) at Tulane (9-2, 6-1)

7:30 p.m. | ESPNU

The 49ers will close out the debut season of the Tim Albin era by facing a top-25 Tulane squad still chasing an American Conference championship and College Football Playoff berth. It has been a rough year overall for the Niners, whose only win came against FCS Monmouth in September. Charlotte has lost eight-straight since and will have its hands full again.

Tulane is favored by 30+ points. The Green Wave just need a win to make the American title game. Tulane has a number of weapons, and kicker Patrick Durkin outscored Temple by himself last Saturday, booting field goals of 52, 50, 42, 38 and 36 yards in a 37-13 triumph. Quarterback Jake Retzlaff, a dual-threat, has thrown for and rushed for touchdowns in the same game seven times this season.

North Carolina (4-7, 2-5) at NC State (6-5, 3-4)

7:30 p.m. | ACC Network

North Carolina has lost to in-state rivals Wake Forest, NC State and Duke in the same season only twice – in 1988 and 1989, according to Dadgumboxscores on X. The Tar Heels will have to defy odds and recent history to avoid that ignominious feat in 2025.

UNC leads the overall rivalry 68-40-6, but NC State has enjoyed mastery over the Heels through most of the 2000s. The Wolfpack has won each of the past four, seven of the last nine and 16 of the last 25 meetings. The rivalry is turning red.

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick has said his group is getting better. And there have been improvements, especially on defense. But sitting at 4-7 with a team that beats itself with penalties and missed assignments, loses to in-state rivals and struggles to move the ball certainly doesn’t live up to the “33rd NFL team” moniker the new staff adopted when it came aboard.

Is Saturday the swan song for Dave Doeren at NC State? There were rumblings back in the summer and early fall he may retire after this season, and calls from some fans to make a leadership change. Regardless, if there is one thing Doeren has understood as NC State’s coach is the importance of being the baby blue rivals.

Carter-Finley Stadium should be full and rocking Saturday night, a fitting setting for the final regular season college football game played in North Carolina in 2025.
