CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The much anticipated Tim Albin era at Charlotte kicks off in a high-profile showdown against Appalachian State in late August, marking the start of an intriguing 2025 football schedule for the 49ers.
Charlotte released its full 12-game slate Friday, and the upcoming calendar includes a juicy home matchup with North Carolina, a rivalry showdown at East Carolina, and a late-season test at two-time national champion Georgia.
The full American Athletic Conference (AAC) campaign features two weekday home games on national TV and a strong home slate for Niner Nation.
Charlotte is coming off a 5-7 finish in 2024, closing strong with two wins under interim coach Tim Brewster before Albin was hired in December. Now, the former Ohio head coach looks to build momentum in his first season.

📅 Key Games on the 2025 Charlotte Football Schedule
🏟️ Friday Night Mayo Action vs. App State
Charlotte and Appalachian State renew their in-state battle under the bright lights of Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, in the Duke’s Mayo Classic on Friday, Aug. 29. The popular kickoff showcase game included NC State-Tennessee and UNC-South Carolina the past two seasons.
The 49ers are 0-3 all-time against the Mountaineers, with the most recent meeting in 2020 (35-20 loss). This game offers a prime opportunity for Charlotte to flip the script and start the Albin era with a statement win on a big stage.
🏡 Bill Belichick, Tar Heels Coming to Richardson Stadium
Charlotte hosting North Carolina is big—but it’s even more monumental because Bill Belichick is now in charge of the Tar Heels. The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach brings his first UNC squad to Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6, making this one of the most anticipated home games in Charlotte’s history.
🤝 AAC Rivalry Showdown: 49ers at ECU
Charlotte’s rivalry with East Carolina is still young, but the 49ers own a perfect 2-0 record against the Pirates since joining them in the American Athletic Conference. Charlotte blitzed ECU 55-24 last season in front of the home fans.
But this year’s meeting will be in Greenville on Nov. 8, and the Pirates under new coach Blake Harrell — promoted from interim toward the end of last season — will be itching to make amends for their 2024 debacle.
🐶 Late-Season SEC Gauntlet: 49ers at Georgia
The toughest test of the season, at least from a prestige point of view, comes late in the year, as Charlotte travels to face Georgia in Athens. The Bulldogs—national champions in 2022 and 2023—have been a dominant force in college football’s elite.
This game will be an intriguing measuring stick for the 49ers toward the end of their first season under Albin’s leadership.
