Western Carolina, Wofford and East Tennessee State each landed Class of 2027 commitments from North Carolina players over the past week, with WCU picking up a pledge from elite Charlotte area quarterback Jared Street.
Street recently transferred to Weddington High after leading Independence to a 10-3 record and the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 7A playoffs last fall.
Street’s future teammate at Weddington, tight end/H-back Matthew McCoy, committed to Wofford earlier in the week, while standout two-way athlete Le’Eric Cooper Jr. of Rolesville announced Thursday that he will continue his career at East Tennessee State.
The commitments come during the same time frame that Southern Conference coaches and players gathered for the league’s annual football media day in Greenville, SC.
NC Football News has tracked roughly 100 North Carolina prospects from the Class of 2027 who have announced Division I commitments, with recruiting expected to continue as teams begin preseason practice and the high school season approaches in a few weeks.

Commitment Snapshots
🐾 Western Carolina: Jared Street Jr., QB, Weddington
Street committed to the Catamounts on July 22 after an impressive junior season at Independence High.
The dual-threat quarterback completed 144 of 227 passes for 2,317 yards and 19 touchdowns while adding 511 rushing yards and five scores in 2025. He transferred to Weddington for his senior season, ironically the school that knocked Independence out of the 7A playoffs a year ago.
Western Carolina offered Street following a June camp, and he ultimately chose the Catamounts over reported offers from Wake Forest, Appalachian State, East Carolina, Army, Navy, Liberty, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, ETSU, Mercer, Samford, Southeast Missouri State and Wofford.
Street described his game this way during the recruiting process in a social media post:
“I bring high football IQ, I distribute the ball to all receivers, can make every throw in limited space, I can play under center, in the gun, RPO, play action.”

🐺 Wofford: Matthew McCoy, TE/H-Back, Weddington
McCoy announced his commitment to Wofford on July 16 after receiving his first Division I offer from the Terriers in May.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect caught 17 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns during his junior season. He also contributed on defense earlier in his career, giving Wofford a versatile player who has experience in multiple roles.
McCoy will now team with future Catamount quarterback Jared Street at Weddington this fall before the two head to rival Southern Conference programs.
🏴☠️ ETSU: Le’Eric Cooper Jr., WR, Rolesville
Cooper committed to East Tennessee State on July 23 following a standout junior campaign as one of the state’s top two-way playmakers.
The 6-foot-2 receiver played at Knightdale High last season and finished 2025 with 38 receptions for 705 yards and 12 touchdowns, while adding more than 50 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two interceptions on defense.
He posted three 100-yard receiving games during the 2025 campaign and also held reported scholarship offers from Marshall, James Madison, Campbell, North Carolina Central, Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman and Charleston Southern.
Cooper transferred to Rolesville ahead of his senior season and carries a 4.0 GPA.
