The Carolina Panthers scored 37 points, Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, and Jalen Coker delivered a breakout performance Sunday.
Somehow, none of it was nearly enough.
Chicago shredded Carolina for 291 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground, pulling away in the second half for a 59-37 victory at Bank of America Stadium in one of the wildest season openers in NFL history.
The teams combined for 96 points, setting an NFL record for a season opener. The 59 points were also the most ever allowed by the Panthers, surpassing the previous franchise record of 52.
Carolina twice erased 14-point deficits during an entertaining first half. The Panthers fell behind 21-7 before pulling even at 21, then entered halftime trailing 31-24. Chuba Hubbard’s second touchdown tied the game at 31 in the third quarter.
That’s when Chicago took over.
D’Andre Swift’s 1-yard touchdown put the Bears back in front, and after Carolina failed on fourth down, Kyle Monangai broke two tackles and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. Chicago eventually piled up 59 points behind a rushing attack that Carolina simply never solved.
Swift finished with 124 yards and three touchdowns, while Monangai added 100 yards and a score. Quarterback Caleb Williams contributed 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns, giving those three players 289 yards and all six of Chicago’s rushing scores.
Young, Coker provide plenty of offense
The result obscured what was easily Young’s best season-opening performance.
Young completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, including a 51-yard scoring strike to Coker. The third-year receiver caught eight of nine targets for 138 yards and two touchdowns, giving Carolina an explosive downfield threat throughout the afternoon.
But Carolina repeatedly hurt itself when it needed stops. The Panthers committed 11 penalties for 84 yards, including a roughing-the-passer penalty that extended a Chicago touchdown drive. An offsides penalty later erased what appeared to be an interception in the end zone; Chicago scored two plays later.
The Panthers managed one final Young-to-Coker touchdown with four minutes remaining, but by then a historic afternoon had gotten away from them.
Carolina scored more than enough points to win most NFL games.
On Sunday, 37 wasn’t even close.

What’s Next for the Carolina Panthers?
The Panthers (0-1) hit the road for their first NFC South game of the season, visiting the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with FOX carrying the game.
Carolina will have a week to address a defense that allowed 59 points and 291 rushing yards against Chicago before facing its first division opponent.

The Chicago Bears spoiled the Carolina Panthers’ 2026 season debut with a 59-37 victory Sunday at Bank of America Stadium in a game that produced 96 combined points, a new NFL record for an opener.
Carolina rallied from a 21-7 deficit to tie the game in the first half and scored 37 points behind a big afternoon from Bryce Young and Jalen Coker, but the Panthers could not slow Chicago’s offense. The Bears broke the game open in the second half behind a punishing rushing attack.
Fourth Quarter
3:40 — Swift’s third TD pushes Bears to 59-37
Chicago needed just 20 seconds to add another touchdown after recovering Carolina’s onside kick. The Bears went 49 yards in four plays, with D’Andre Swift breaking loose for a 28-yard touchdown run to extend Chicago’s lead to 59-37 with 3:40 remaining.
Swift now has 124 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Kyle Monangai has also topped the century mark with 100 yards and a touchdown. The teams have combined for 96 points, shattering the old NFL record for most points in a season opener set by the Eagles and Redskins in 1947 (45-42 win by the Eagles).

Carolina continued to fight despite facing a three-touchdown deficit, putting together a 10-play, 76-yard drive that ended with Bryce Young’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Coker. The extra point was blocked, leaving Chicago ahead 52-37 with 4:00 remaining.
Coker has been outstanding in the opener, catching eight of nine targets for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Young has thrown for 361 yards and three touchdowns, completing 23 of 37 passes with one interception.

6:27 — Williams TD gives Bears commanding 52-31 lead
Carolina appeared to have the stop it desperately needed, but another costly penalty helped Chicago deliver what could be the knockout punch on the season opener.
The Panthers intercepted Caleb Williams in the end zone, but the play was erased by an offsides penalty. Two plays later, Williams connected with Jahdae Walker for a 1-yard touchdown, extending Chicago’s lead to 52-31 with 6:27 remaining.
The Bears’ 12-play, 61-yard drive consumed 8:23, leaving Carolina little time to overcome a three-touchdown deficit.
Third Quarter
0:40 — Monangai’s 61-yard TD gives Bears 45-31 lead
A Carolina turnover on downs late in the third period turned into immediate trouble. On Chicago’s next play, Kyle Monangai broke two tackles near the line of scrimmage and raced 61 yards for a touchdown, extending the Bears’ lead to 45-31.
It was Chicago’s fifth rushing touchdown of the game. The Bears have piled up 220 rushing yards at 7.9 yards per carry against the Panthers.
3:05 — Swift’s second TD puts Bears back in front
A costly Carolina penalty helped Chicago regain the lead late in the third quarter. A roughing-the-passer penalty extended the Bears’ possession, and Chicago eventually finished the 13-play, 65-yard drive with D’Andre Swift’s 1-yard touchdown run.
Swift’s second touchdown of the game gave the Bears a 38-31 lead with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter. He has 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns, joining Caleb Williams with two rushing scores.

Chuba Hubbard rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, and the Panthers pulled into a 31-31 tie with the Bears in what has been an offensive showcase for both teams so far.

No defense was safe in Charlotte during a wild first half. Chicago piled up 315 total yards and Carolina added 219 as the teams combined for 55 points before the break.
Caleb Williams completed 12 of 16 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown and added 52 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. D’Andre Swift rushed 10 times for 67 yards and a score. For Carolina, Bryce Young was 11 of 17 for 193 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Jalen Coker caught four passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Malik Muhammad II intercepted Young with five seconds remaining to end Carolina’s final possession of the half.

Caleb Williams scrambled for a 29-yard touchdown after being flushed from the pocket, giving Chicago a 31-24 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the first half.
It was Williams’ second rushing touchdown of the game and the longest touchdown run of his NFL career. Cairo Santos added the extra point as the Bears and Panthers pushed their combined first-half scoring total to 55 points.
2:35 — Panthers even the score again with a Fitzgerald FG
Ryan Fitzgerald connected on a 44-yard field goal to pull Carolina even at 24-24 with 2:35 remaining in a wild first half. The kick capped a seven-play, 48-yard drive for the Panthers, who have now scored on four of their first-half possessions.

A Carolina special-teams mistake gave Chicago excellent field position, but the Panthers’ defense kept the damage to three points.
The Panthers muffed a punt, allowing the Bears to take over at the Carolina 28. Carolina’s defense held from there, forcing Chicago to settle for a 40-yard Cairo Santos field goal that gave the Bears a 24-21 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first half.

The Panthers made Chicago pay for an aggressive fourth-down decision, turning a short field into the tying touchdown. The Bears went for it on fourth-and-short from their own 21, but Caleb Williams was stopped short, giving Carolina possession deep in Chicago territory.

Coker has been targeted three times and has three receptions for 94 yards, emerging as Carolina’s biggest offensive weapon early in the opener.

D’Andre Swift scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give Chicago a 14-7 lead with 1:59 remaining in the first quarter. Swift has already rushed for 65 yards on eight carries against the Carolina defense.
The score was set up by an acrobatic 47-yard reception by Rome Odunze from Caleb Williams that moved Chicago to the Panthers’ 6-yard line. Cairo Santos added the extra point.

Caleb Williams scrambled for a 9-yard touchdown to cap Chicago’s answering drive, tying the game 7-7. D’Andre Swift helped set up the score with a 32-yard run into the red zone, continuing a fast start against the Carolina run defense.
11:33 — Panthers strike first on Young-to-Hubbard touchdown
The Panthers turned their first takeaway of the season into their first touchdown. On third-and-goal from the Chicago 4, Bryce Young found Chuba Hubbard for a 4-yard touchdown pass, and Ryan Fitzgerald’s extra point gave Carolina a 7-0 lead.
