Charlotte coach Tim Albin knows what he wants the 49ers’ football program to become. He sees examples of it in Appalachian State, the team his Niners will face this week.
On Saturday night, Charlotte will get another up-close look at the Mountaineers when it visits unbeaten App State for a sold-out showdown at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone.
The Mountaineers (2-0) are coming off a 27-24 victory at East Carolina, while Charlotte (0-2) is looking for its first win after losses to The Citadel and Ole Miss. The 49ers also enter the matchup with a reshuffled backfield following the departure of running back Chance Williams.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the game streaming on ESPN+.

Charlotte loses key running back Chance Williams
Charlotte will be without Chance Williams, who rushed nine times for a team-high 74 yards against Ole Miss last week. Coach Tim Albin confirmed Monday that Williams is no longer with the program but declined to elaborate, even when asked a follow-up question.
Williams ranked second on the team with 116 rushing yards through two games. Albin said the 49ers will continue using a committee approach in the backfield rather than relying on one featured runner.
Khamani Alexander, an App State transfer, leads the 49ers with 150 yards on 20 attempts thus far.
QB watch: Conner Harrell returns, but Gonzales remains the starter
Charlotte quarterback Conner Harrell saw his first action since suffering a knee injury early last season when he played against Ole Miss, completing 5 of 6 passes for 50 yards. Albin said Cole Gonzales will remain the starter, but Harrell’s return gives the 49ers another option at quarterback.
Gonzales has thrown for 450 yards and three touchdowns through two games but also has thrown three interceptions.
Another sellout in Boone
App State will host Charlotte in a sold-out Black Saturday game. The Mountaineers have sold out 17 of their last 19 home games, according to the school’s announcement.
The 6 p.m. kickoff is part of App State Athletics Hall of Fame weekend. Former App State standout KT Stovall is among five members of this year’s Athletics Hall of Fame class. The 2003 Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Buck Buchanan Award finalist logged 29.5 career sacks during his time in Boone, third in program history.
A model for what Charlotte hopes to become
Albin sees App State and East Carolina as examples of what he wants Charlotte’s football program to become. The Mountaineers defeated ECU 27-24 in Greenville last week, a result that impressed the Charlotte coach.
“They went into a hostile environment, a sold-out show at East Carolina and got it done on the road,” Albin told media earlier this week. “I experienced that last year, and it is not an easy place to do that and they got it done. I told the team we’re trying to build a program like App State and East Carolina, that is what we are striving to do.”
A long stretch close to home
Saturday marks the third of five consecutive games in North Carolina for App State. After opening at home against Maine and winning at East Carolina, the Mountaineers host Charlotte, visit NC State on Sept. 26 and return home to face Old Dominion on Oct. 10 following a bye week.
App State’s first trip outside North Carolina won’t come until Oct. 16, when they visit Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC.

🔎 What the Numbers Say
Charlotte is moving the ball but struggling to turn production into victories. The 49ers are averaging 430 yards and 6.4 yards per play, yet have opened 0-2. They’ve scored 50 points while allowing 84, including a 43-41 triple-overtime loss to The Citadel and a 41-9 defeat at Ole Miss.
App State’s offense has been operating at a different level. The Mountaineers average 521 yards and 41 points per game, with 213.5 rushing yards and 307.5 passing yards. They’ve scored 10 touchdowns in two games and are averaging 7.2 yards per play.
Malachi Singleton has been remarkably accurate. App State’s first-year starting quarterback has completed 42 of 52 passes (80.8%) for 558 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Charlotte’s Cole Gonzales has thrown for 450 yards and three touchdowns but has also been intercepted three times. The Mountaineers have yet to throw an interception as a team.
Charlotte’s red-zone defense has been a major problem. Opponents have reached the red zone nine times against the 49ers and scored touchdowns on all nine possessions. Charlotte has also allowed nine rushing touchdowns through two games, compared with just one allowed by App State.
Third down tells a different story. Charlotte has converted 45.2% of its third downs, compared with just 33.3% for App State. Defensively, however, the Mountaineers have held opponents to 28.6% on third down, while Charlotte has allowed a 47.4% conversion rate.
App State has taken better care of the football. The Mountaineers have committed just one turnover while collecting four takeaways, including three interceptions. Charlotte has thrown three interceptions and forced only one turnover. App State has turned takeaways into 14 points; Charlotte has yet to score off a turnover.
Charlotte’s rushing bright spot: Khamani Alexander has 150 yards on 20 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per attempt. He has a 66-yard run, the longest rushing play recorded by either team so far.
App State’s pass-rushing specialist: Caleb Sandstrom has three of the Mountaineers’ four sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Charlotte has allowed only two sacks, making that an interesting individual matchup.
