Campbell scored on all five second-half possessions and pulled away for a 44-20 conference win at Hampton on Saturday night.
The 22nd-ranked Camels notched 31 points in the third quarter, turning a 13-13 halftime tie into a runaway victory.
Coach Braxton Harris’ team improved to 4-1 overall and sits atop the early season CAA standings with a 2-0 mark. Hampton fell to 1-4, 0-2.
Two Campbell fumbles in the first half led directly to 10 Hampton points. But a defensive stand late in the second quarter helped the Camels build momentum for what would be a dominant surge after the break.
5 Things to Know About Campbell’s 44-20 Win at Hampton:
- Campbell quarterback Kamden Sixkiller impressed again, throwing for 308 yards and matching a career-high with five touchdown passes. He also led Campbell in rushing, finishing with 73 yards on five carries. Sixkiller now has 1,449 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions on the season.
- Sixkiller got 12 different pass-catchers involved. Chinua Ezeigbo made both of his catches count, recording two touchdowns, including a 64-yarder. De’von Thomas, Christian Campbell and Connor Adair also found the end zone on Sixkiller throws.
- Until Saturday, Campbell had scored 30+ points in a quarter only three other times. It was the first time since the 2017 season opener against Methodist when Campbell recorded 35 points. The Camels managed 243 yards of offense in the prolific third quarter.
- Mars Hill transfer Jon Gullette continues to be a Swiss army knife type of player for the Camels. Gullette rushed for 45 yards on nine carries, caught four passes for 23 yards and returned a kickoff 57 yards. All told, Gullette had 140 all-purpose yards.
- Campbell’s stopping unit picked off two passes for the second game in a row (Gavin Harris and Kareem Williams). The Camels also logged nine tackles-for-loss, including 2.5 from AJ Benton (with a fumble recovery) and 2.0 from Justin Garza.
What’s Next for Campbell?
The Camels step out of conference one last time, traveling to Durham to face North Carolina Central on Saturday at 6 p.m. The teams last played in 2024, with NCCU securing a 45-14 decision. Campbell dropped a 49-48 overtime decision to the Eagles in 2023 and won in Buies Creek 48-18 in 2022.
The release of the latest FCS top-25 rankings will bear watching on Monday. Campbell earned its first-ever national ranking last week, entering the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 in the No. 22 position. How much will the Camels move up in that poll, and will they appear in the FCS coaches poll as well?
