North Carolina hits the road for the second time this season Saturday when the Tar Heels visit unbeaten and nationally ranked Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium.

UNC (2-2, 0-1 ACC) showed some fight in a 37-26 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame last week but now faces another difficult test against a Pitt team that is 5-0 and No. 25 in the AP poll.

The Panthers will have a significant change at quarterback, however, after starter Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending knee injury against Virginia Tech.

Here is everything to know about UNC at Pitt, including kickoff time, TV information, odds, injury updates, key stats and what to watch.

⏪ Last Time Out

Notre Dame 37, North Carolina 26 (Oct. 3) – The Tar Heels rallied from a 21-7 deficit, pulling within a point after Jaden Jefferson opened the second half with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown. Notre Dame responded by leaning on its running game to put the game away.

Pittsburgh 35, Virginia Tech 33 (Oct. 2) – Pitt remained unbeaten when Virginia Tech missed a 36-yard field goal on the final play, although replays sparked debate over whether the kick sailed inside the upright. The victory was costly, however, as quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending knee injury.

🔍 What to Know About UNC at Pitt

Pitt’s unbeaten start now rests with a new quarterback, Holden Geriner

Pitt will have a new starting quarterback Saturday after sophomore Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the Panthers’ victory at Virginia Tech. Heintschel had been one of the ACC’s most productive quarterbacks, completing 66.2% of his passes for 1,304 yards with 14 touchdowns and only one interception.

Fifth-year senior Holden Geriner will make the first start of his college career against North Carolina. Geriner has completed 19 of 26 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in three appearances this season, including an 8-for-12 performance for 78 yards and a touchdown after replacing Heintschel at Virginia Tech.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi praised Geriner’s composure and said the Panthers have plenty of confidence in him, but Pitt also figures to lean heavily on its running game. The Panthers average 162 rushing yards per game and have three backs with at least 100 yards this season.

North Carolina is still looking for a signature win

North Carolina has shown signs of progress in its second season under Bill Belichick, but the Tar Heels are still looking for a victory that demonstrates how far the program has come. UNC opened with wins over TCU and ETSU before missing an opportunity at Clemson and falling to No. 3 Notre Dame despite rallying to within a point early in the second half.

Saturday presents another opportunity. Pitt is undefeated, nationally ranked and playing at home. A road victory would easily be North Carolina’s most significant win of the season – and arguably the most notable of Belichick’s tenure.

Running room has been almost impossible to find against Pitt

North Carolina’s ability to stay balanced could be tested by one of Pitt’s biggest strengths. The Panthers have allowed only 278 rushing yards through five games – 55.6 per game – and opponents are averaging just 2.0 yards per carry.

UNC averages 135.5 rushing yards per game, led by Benjamin Hall’s 251 yards and 5.8 yards per carry. If the Tar Heels can’t establish something on the ground, considerably more pressure will fall on Billy Edwards Jr. against a Pitt defense allowing only 13.4 points per game.

Xavier Lewis could make life uncomfortable for Pitt’s new quarterback

One of the biggest challenges for first-time Pitt starter Holden Geriner will be dealing with a North Carolina pass rush led by Xavier Lewis. Lewis has six sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss through four games, accounting for six of UNC’s 10 sacks this season.

Pitt’s offensive line has protected its quarterbacks exceptionally well, allowing only five sacks through five games. Something will have to give Saturday.
