One of the most productive wide receivers in 1A North Carolina high school football last season has committed to play for Gardner-Webb in 2025.
Rising senior Ashawd Wynn announced his verbal commitment to join the Runnin’ Bulldogs on Twitter/X on Tuesday. Gardner-Webb competes in the FCS Big South/OVC Football Association.
Wynn (6-1, 195) had a monster junior season at Hobbton High in Newton Grove, piling up 1,823 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. He made 94 catches on the year and averaged 161.6 receiving yards per contest, garnering third-team all-state recognition from HighSchoolOT among other honors.
Wynn put up video game numbers in what became the highest scoring prep football contest in North Carolina history last October. Hobbton lost to Pender 106-83 but not before Wynn caught nine passes — five for touchdowns (!) — and finished with 250 receiving yards.
Amazingly, in terms of total yardage, that performance against Pender only ranked third-best of the season. Wynn made 16 catches for 267 yards and a score against North Duplin in late October, then went for 283 yards and three TDs on 10 catches against Northampton County on Nov. 3.
Per MaxPreps.com, Wynn has 2,961 career receiving yards and 29 touchdowns over two varsity seasons. He’s averaged 17 yards per reception.
This coming season, Wynn will make a change of scenery from 1A East football to 4A West football. He has announced his intention to transfer to Hough High School in Cornelius. Hough competes in the 4A ranks in 3A/4A Queen City Conference.
Wynn reported college offers from Charlotte and Maine. He is the second wide receiver from Hough to make a verbal commitment to the Bulldogs, now coached by Cris Reisert, this month. Sean Brady announced his commitment to GWU on July 21.
