Appalachian State football moves from one Georgia rival to another this week, welcoming Georgia State to Kidd Brewer Stadium for a Saturday afternoon Sun Belt Conference showdown.
While the Mountaineers’ football series with the Panthers is a lot shorter than with historic nemesis Georgia Southern, App State has totally dominated this one. The Mountaineers are 12-0 all-time since the first matchup in 2014.
Appalachian State will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 19-3 defeat at Georgia Southern. Georgia State started the season 4-1 but has since lost three in a row. The Panthers will be without their starting quarterback Cameran Brown for the second week in a row due to injury.
App State is favored Saturday but must navigate a Georgia State defense that likes to disrupt plays in the backfield and must slow a Georgia State offense that has outgained many of its opponents this season.

What to Know about App State-Georgia State
Appalachian State is on the cusp of bowl eligibility
Appalachian State made a bowl with only five wins in 2025 because other schools opted out of the post-season and left them an open spot. The Mountaineers can play their way in this year with a win Saturday against Georgia State, reaching the magical six-win plateau for eligibility.
App State has never lost to Georgia State in 12 previous meetings. The Panthers come into Saturday on a three-game losing skid after a 4-1 start that included a 42-10 drubbing of Old Dominion (a team that beat ASU in October).
Georgia State QB Cameran Brown will be out again
Georgia State starting signal caller Cameran Brown will be sidelined for the second game in a row after missing last week’s loss to Coastal Carolina with an undisclosed lower body injury. Brown has thrown 14 touchdown passes this season.
Fifth-year Ayden Pereira (Merrimack transfer) is expected to start again in Brown’s stead. Pereira completed 20-of-37 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions against Coastal. He also rushed 13 times for 33 net yards (including three sacks).
Georgia State rallied from a 31-6 deficit in the fourth quarter, with Pereira completing both of his TD throws during the late stretch.
Mountaineers keeping it close
While App State is a near touchdown favorite heading into Saturday, recent history suggests this game could be a nailbiter. The Mountaineers beat Maine 55-3 in the season opener, but every other win has been by 5 points or less, including 3-point victories over ECU, Coastal Carolina and James Madison.
App State has played 10 home games since Dowell Loggains took over as head coach. Nine have been decided by eight points or fewer, with the Maine win the only exception.
Georgia State likes to chase quarterbacks
The Panthers have logged 23 sacks as a team this season, second-most in the Sun Belt behind James Madison. Xavier Esqillion has recorded seven of those sacks, tied for first in the conference. Teammate Jabriel Rhodes-Nelson has five sacks.
Appalachian State ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in sacks allowed with 14. The Mountaineers have had trouble themselves getting to opposing quarterbacks, earning just nine sacks in eight games – 13th out of 14 teams in the Sun Belt.
Georgia State has 49 tackles-for-loss, led by Esqillion’s 9.5 (second in the conference).
