Kamden Sixkiller’s stat line will be the first thing that gets your attention from Campbell’s 48-35 comeback win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek.
The Campbell quarterback threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Camels rally from 14 points down and secure a school-record eighth win of the season.
The senior gunslinger with one of the greatest names in college football became the school’s new single-season passing leader and distributed the ball to 10 different receivers.
But you can’t talk about Campbell’s latest football win without also mentioning the defense. Yes, the Camels gave up 553 yards of offense to the Seawolves. Yes, Stony Brook quarterback Quinn Boyd had a stat-stuffing day of his own (348 passing yards, four touchdowns, 43 rushing yards), and Jameer Reeder rushed for 100 yards and another score.
But over the final 25 minutes of game action Saturday, the Campbell stopping unit was every much as pivotal as Sixkiller and his cadre of playmakers from the offensive side.
Stony Brook never scored again after taking a 35-21 lead on Boyd’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Seth Sweitzer with 12:34 to go in the third quarter. Running lanes that were wide open clogged up. Boyd had a tougher time finding open receivers. Third down was no longer automatic.
The Seawolves’ final six possessions went punt, punt, turnover on downs, interception, turnover on downs, end of game. Not at all like Stony Brook’s first six series, which featured five TDs and a punt.
“Man, great win. I told those guys in the locker room, man, they stayed in the fight, right, and they didn’t get in their feelings,” Campbell coach Braxton Harris said of the second half defensive turnaround. “Those guys stayed in the fight, and they trusted their teammates.”
AJ Benton led the Campbell defensive stat sheet with 11 tackles, including five solo stops. Kaleb Simpkins picked off a pass. Ravel Cato provided eight tackles, while DaVonyae Pettis added five tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and a jarring quarterback pressure in the fourth quarter that knocked Boyd from the game.
“We threw some different things at them in the second half, just adjustments, nothing crazy.” Harris said. “… It’s more of a mentality and a mindset of what it takes and how they prepare every week than necessarily a schematic piece on the football field.”
Campbell had standouts in all phases Saturday.
Jon Gullette, a transfer from D2 Mars Hill, caught a touchdown pass to go with his 95-yard kickoff return touchdown that answered Stony Brook’s final TD. Ethan Lawrence rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns after JJ Cowan exited the game early in the third quarter.
Christian Campbell enjoyed a career receiving game – seven catches, 117 yards, one touchdown. Jyron Waiters hauled in a 75-yard scoring strike near the end of the first half and finished with 98 receiving yards.
Brandon Bowman flipped the field with a 71-yard punt and kicked two others that gave him a 61.3-yards-per-punt average on the day.
The pleasing result left Campbell with an 8-2 record, 5-1 in the CAA standings – good enough for sole possession of second place behind Monmouth (8-2, 7-0) after Albany suffered a loss on Saturday.
The Camels have two games left in the regular season, traveling to Elon next Saturday and then hosting Monmouth in what is shaping up to be the most monumental Senior Day in the school’s football history. A conference title could be at stake in Buies Creek, another first for a program that has enjoyed a lot of them this fall.
But Harris wasn’t getting too far ahead of things while assessing his team’s latest win. Just appreciating the moment and looking at the next step.
“I remember we talked about we want to make football games in November matter around here,” Harris said. “Campbell has never beaten Elon, and these guys in that locker room know that, and they’ll be excited for the challenge coming up this coming week.”
