🔍 What to Know About App State-Georgia Southern

Sun Belt East race heats up

Appalachian State’s 34-31 overtime upset of previously unbeaten James Madison last Thursday raised the stakes for Saturday’s rivalry showdown.

JMU (4-1 Sun Belt) remains atop the division standings, but App State (2-1) and Georgia Southern (2-1) are within striking distance. All three teams have just one conference loss.

The Mountaineers have won two straight league games after falling to Old Dominion in their conference opener. Georgia Southern has also won two of its first three Sun Belt contests, including a 23-15 victory at Old Dominion two weeks ago.

Saturday’s winner will improve to 3-1 in conference play and remain in strong position to challenge JMU for the division crown. The loser will fall to 2-2 and face a more difficult path to the championship game.

App State does have the tiebreaker edge over James Madison if it comes to that. Georgia Southern lost to the Dukes earlier in the season.

Deeper Than Hate: A rivalry with deep roots

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern renew one of college football’s fiercest rivalries on Saturday evening, a series known as “Deeper Than Hate.”

The programs first met in 1932 when both were teachers colleges, but the rivalry took real shape during their days as FCS powers in the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers and Eagles combined to win nine national championships at that level before making the jump to the Sun Belt Conference and FBS together in 2014.

The teams have met annually since 1993, with App State holding a narrow 21-19-1 advantage in the all-time series.

The rivalry added another chapter in December 2025 when the teams met in the Birmingham Bowl, their first postseason meeting since moving to the FBS and their first matchup outside Boone or Statesboro.

Can App State avoid a letdown in Statesboro?

The Mountaineers are coming off two dramatic victories, including an emotional overtime upset of previously unbeaten James Madison. Now they face a Georgia Southern team that enjoyed an open weekend and has been favored by as many as 5.5 points despite its losing overall record.

The Eagles have enjoyed extra preparation time, while App State must avoid a letdown after two emotional conference victories.

App State’s award-winning playmakers

Two Appalachian State players earned Sun Belt Conference weekly honors following the Mountaineers’ 34-31 overtime upset of James Madison. Linebacker Colton Phares was named Defensive Player of the Week, while kicker James London earned Special Teams Player of the Week.

Phares recorded a career-high 13 tackles and made a crucial fourth-quarter interception that set up an App State touchdown. The senior leads the Mountaineers with 51 tackles this season and has two interceptions.

London made all four of his field-goal attempts against JMU, including the 40-yard overtime winner. His 14-point performance marked just the fourth time in App State history that a kicker made at least four field goals in a game without a miss.
