🏈 Last Time Out

  • Appalachian State 55, Maine 3 – Malachi Singleton had a near-perfect passing day (22-for-24, 291 yards, 3 touchdown passes), and the Mountaineers overwhelmed their FCS visitor on Sept. 5.
  • No. 13 Alabama 48, East Carolina 10 – A trip to Tuscaloosa to open the season proved a tall order for the Pirates, who fell behind 38-10 by halftime and was held to two rushing yards total.

🔍 What to Know About the App State vs. East Carolina football game

The rivalry is going away – at least for now

Saturday’s game is the final matchup of a four-game non-conference series that began in 2021, and App State and East Carolina do not currently have another meeting scheduled.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the rivalry is headed for another long hiatus. Both programs still have openings on future non-conference schedules through the early 2030s (though both schools already have full non-conference slates in 2028).

For now, however, Saturday is the last scheduled meeting between the Mountaineers and Pirates – the 35th in the all-time history. Enjoy it.

Week 1 stats don’t tell the whole story

The early statistical comparison heavily favors App State. The Mountaineers piled up 647 yards and averaged 9.0 yards per play in their 55-3 season-opening victory, while ECU managed 162 yards and 4.0 yards per play in a 48-10 loss.

There’s an enormous difference in context, however. App State opened against FCS Maine in Boone, while East Carolina traveled to Tuscaloosa to face No. 13 Alabama. Saturday should provide a much better measuring stick for both teams.

ECU looking to end App State’s recent run

App State has won three consecutive meetings in the series, including a 21-19 victory in Greenville in 2024. The Mountaineers also won 33-19 in Charlotte in 2021 and 43-28 in Boone in 2023.

East Carolina’s most recent victory over App State came in 2012, when the Pirates won 35-13 in Greenville to complete what was then a six-game winning streak in the series.

This will be the first-ever showdown between ECU’s Blake Harrell and App State’s Dowell Loggains in their respective roles as head coaches.
