Just when it seemed like the Carolina Panthers were starting to build momentum for the back half of the season, Baker, Bucky and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers knocked them off course.

The Panthers suffered a 43-13 home loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon – by far their ugliest performance of the season. Baker Mayfield returned from a hand injury to direct an effective Tampa Bay offensive attack, while Bucky Irving rushed for 100+ yards and two scores. Carolina meanwhile turned the ball over four times and looked out of sorts in all phases.

The Panthers (3-3) will face another team looking to get back on course this week when it visits the Green Bay Packers for Thursday Night Football. The Packers (4-3) dropped a 20-17 decision to the Lions on Sunday, giving up the game-winning field goal on the final play.

Thursday’s Panthers-Packers contest kicks off at 8:15 p.m. at historic Lambeau Field.

🔍 What to Know About Panthers-Packers

Panthers face a short turnaround after blowout loss

Carolina’s stretch of encouraging performances came to an abrupt halt Sunday when Tampa Bay rolled to a 43-13 victory in Charlotte.

The Panthers committed four turnovers, surrendered 258 rushing yards and allowed the Buccaneers to control the game on the ground. Even when Carolina scored, things seemed to come unglued (the Bucs blocked a PAT attempt and returned it for two points).

Now Carolina must regroup on a short week before facing Green Bay at Lambeau Field.

Thursday’s matchup will offer an immediate test of whether the Tampa Bay game was just “one of those days” or if there are more systemic issues going on with the team.

Can Carolina take advantage of Green Bay’s struggling ground game?

The Packers have averaged just 59.9 rushing yards per game through seven contests, while the Panthers have struggled to contain opposing running backs, allowing 153.2 yards per outing.

Carolina’s problems were especially evident against Tampa Bay, which averaged 5.3 yards per rush over 49 carries.

Green Bay’s rushing production has been limited, but Thursday presents an opportunity for the Packers to establish a more balanced attack against a defense that has been vulnerable on the ground.

Quarterback matchup could take center stage

Carolina’s Bryce Young and Green Bay’s Jordan Love have both put up solid passing numbers this season.

Young has thrown for 1,712 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions in six games. Love has accumulated 1,958 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions in seven contests.

Both quarterbacks will be looking to rebound from disappointing team performances Sunday, and their ability to protect the football could be particularly important after Carolina’s four-turnover outing against Tampa Bay.

Green Bay leads the NFL with nine interceptions. Carolina offensive tackle Taylor Moton just went on injured reserve so how well the Panthers protect Young will be something to monitor. Tampa Bay pressured Young on more than 50 percent of his dropbacks on Sunday.
