What to Know About NC State at Virginia
NC State and Virginia won’t have much time to ease into the 2026 season. Saturday’s opener is also an ACC game between two teams with aspirations of pushing into the upper tier of the conference.
Virginia is coming off a trip to the ACC championship game, while NC State finished 8-5 and closed 2025 with a convincing win over Memphis in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Cavaliers were picked sixth in the 2026 ACC preseason media poll with the Wolfpack immediately behind them in seventh. Oddsmakers have also viewed the teams similarly, with preseason win totals around 7.5 for both.

🐺 NC State brings experience at quarterback
CJ Bailey returns as an established starter to lead an NC State offense that also brings back running back Duke Scott and multiple starters along the offensive line.
Bailey gives the Wolfpack valuable continuity at the most important position on the field. Coach Dave Doeren has also pointed to the veteran leadership on this year’s roster as a strength entering his 14th season at NC State.
⚔️ Virginia turns to Beau Pribula
Virginia will have a new starting quarterback after its run to the ACC championship game. Former Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula won the job during the offseason and will make his Virginia debut against the Wolfpack.
That puts one of the game’s most interesting contrasts at quarterback: NC State enters with an established starter while Virginia begins a new era with an experienced transfer.
💪 Keep an eye on the trenches
Doeren offered considerable praise for Virginia’s offensive line entering the matchup, saying Friday that the Cavaliers could have one of the best offensive lines in the ACC.
That makes NC State’s defensive front one of the key areas to watch Saturday. Doeren said on Aug. 21 that defensive tackle KaTron Evans would be eligible to play in the season opener. He’s been fighting for a sixth year of eligibility, and his presence will certainly be welcomed against the Cavaliers.
👀 Some NC State roles remain unsettled
Don’t expect every position on NC State’s roster to be neatly defined before kickoff.
Doeren said Friday that he was not releasing a depth chart at that point, with competition continuing at several positions. The secondary is among the areas to watch, with Jaren Sensabaugh, Jackson Vick and Ondre Evans competing for roles.
Tight end is another position where the rotation could take shape once the season begins.
🚑 Virginia has an availability question of its own
Virginia linebacker Kam Robinson is a player to monitor this week. Doeren praised Robinson while speaking with reporters Friday but said he wasn’t sure whether the standout linebacker would be available for the opener.
His status could be significant against an NC State offense built around Bailey, Scott and an experienced offensive line.
🔍 Why Saturday matters
Calling an August opener a “must-win” would be excessive. But conference games are precious, and one of these teams will leave Week 0 already 0-1 in the ACC.
That’s especially intriguing because NC State and Virginia enter the season occupying similar territory in the conference pecking order. Virginia was picked sixth and NC State seventh in the preseason poll, and both harbor ambitions of outperforming those projections and getting into the title conversation.
For NC State, winning an ACC road game before September would immediately change the complexion of its season. For Virginia, opening at home with a victory over another projected upper-half ACC team would provide an early indication that last season’s championship-game run wasn’t a one-year spike.
Either way, Saturday gives us an unusually meaningful measuring stick for opening weekend.
