Both teams arrive with something to figure out offensively. ECU finally broke into the win column last week with a 20-17 comeback victory at Old Dominion, but the Pirates continue to sort through their quarterback situation after using both Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams. NCCU, meanwhile, is 2-2 as the Eagles adjust to life without 2025 MEAC Player of the Year Walker Harris at quarterback.
The matchup also gives ECU an opportunity to build some momentum before turning its attention to American Conference play, while the Eagles get their lone shot this season at an FBS opponent from their home state.

Lone in-state FCS vs. FBS matchup this season
Both ECU and NC Central entered 2026 replacing accomplished starting quarterbacks, and neither offense has completely found its footing through September. The in-state programs meet Saturday in Greenville in North Carolina’s only FBS-vs.-FCS matchup of the season.

ECU opened the season with Mitch Griffis as its starter, but Emory Williams saw significant action in last week’s win at Old Dominion. It will be interesting to watch how the Pirates use their quarterbacks this week and whether the offense can build momentum with the conference schedule on the near horizon.
Pirate defender earns weekly American Conference honor
Defensive back Ayden Duncanson picked up American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping the Pirates seal Saturday’s win at Old Dominion. Duncanson helped turn the tide with a 67-yard pick-six in the third quarter to tie the contest 17-17.
He also had two tackles and worked to help the Pirate defensive unit hold ODU to just 123 yards of total offense after halftime.
NCCU’s Joshua Truesdale emerging as defensive standout
Sophomore defensive back Joshua Truesdale was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row. Truesdale recorded 17 tackles, including 12 solo stops, in the Eagles’ loss at Gardner-Webb. Truesdale had 10 tackles, an interception and two pass breakups against NC A&T the week prior.
Truesdale (6-4, 208 pounds) played at Palisades High in Charlotte. He has 36 tackles through four games, with 1.5 TFLs, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

North Carolina Central by the numbers
- The ground game has carried the offense: NCCU is averaging 161.8 rushing yards per game with eight rushing touchdowns, compared with 146.8 yards and four TDs through the air.
- Plez Lawrence has provided the big-play threat: He’s rushed for 323 yards and four touchdowns on just 45 carries, averaging an impressive 7.2 yards per attempt. His long run is 73 yards. He went for 200+ against rival NC A&T.
- Nelson Layne is still settling in as the new QB: The successor to MEAC Player of the Year Walker Harris has completed 61.4% of his passes for 587 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Layne also has 147 rushing yards and two TDs, giving him six total touchdowns through four games.
- The Eagles have been opportunistic on defense: NCCU has forced nine turnovers in four games – five fumble recoveries and four interceptions – while turning it over five times itself.
- Zarion Walters has been living in opposing backfields: The NCCU defender has 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, six quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles through four games.
- Finishing drives has been a mixed bag: NCCU has scored on 17 of 19 red-zone trips, but only nine have resulted in touchdowns. Kicker Riley Daniels has helped make up the difference, going 8-for-9 on field goals.

- Moving the football has been a struggle: ECU is averaging just 285.0 yards and 18.0 points per game through its 1-2 start under first-year offensive coordinator Jordan Davis. The Pirates are gaining only 4.7 yards per play.
- Third down has been downright brutal: The Pirates have converted just 5-of-35 third downs –14.3%. Opponents, meanwhile, are converting at a 40% clip.
- The quarterback numbers help explain the uncertainty: Mitch Griffis is 35-of-65 (53.8%) for 425 yards, three TDs and two interceptions. Emory Williams is 6-of-10 for 45 yards without a TD or interception in limited action.
- There may be something brewing with T.J. Engleman Jr.: He’s rushed for 121 yards on only 21 carries, a team-best 5.8 yards per attempt. He had 99 yards vs. ODU this past weekend. Ashton Gray leads ECU with 152 rushing yards on 32 carries.
- Touchdowns have been hard to come by on the ground: ECU has scored only one rushing touchdown in three games, while opponents have run for nine. The Pirates are being outgained on the ground 536-362.
- The defense has been better than the final scores might suggest: ECU has allowed zero passing touchdowns through three games. All nine offensive touchdowns allowed have come on the ground, although Alabama obviously distorts some of these early-season numbers.
