UPDATE 10/17, 10:55 AM: Duke running back Nate Sheppard will likely be a game-time decision on his availability for the UNC game, On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting. Sheppard has been officially listed as questionable since Wednesday’s injury reports were released by the ACC. Sheppard has rushed for 743 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, and is averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

North Carolina and Duke will renew their football rivalry Saturday in Durham, with both teams coming off dramatically different results in their most recent outings.

The Tar Heels (3-2, 1-1 ACC) are riding the momentum of a 21-17 victory at Pittsburgh, their first win over a nationally ranked opponent under coach Bill Belichick. Duke (4-1, 1-1), meanwhile, will try to bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season in a last-minute heartbreaker at Georgia Tech.

The latest meeting between the Triangle rivals will feature more than the usual bragging rights and quest for the Victory Bell. Both teams are trying to build momentum for the back half of the ACC season, with Duke looking to avoid a second consecutive conference defeat and UNC seeking its first back-to-back wins since September.

⏪ Last Time Out

North Carolina 21, Pittsburgh 17 (Oct. 10) – The Tar Heels picked up their first win over a Top 25 team in the Bill Belichick era. Billy Edwards Jr. completed a 75-yard scoring pass to Shamar Easter with 12:36 left for what would be the winning points. UNC then turned to its defense to preserve the victory, turning away multiple drives inside North Carolina territory.

Georgia Tech 28, Duke 25 (Oct. 10) – The Blue Devils suffered their first loss after opening 4-0. In a wild ending, Duke took a 25-21 lead with 2:40 left, but Georgia Tech went back ahead with 54 seconds on the clock. The Devils managed to move to the Yellow Jackets’ 20-yard line with eight seconds left, but a game-tying kick went wide.

🔍 What to Know About UNC at Duke

Can North Carolina build on its breakthrough?

North Carolina’s victory at Pitt was its first against a ranked opponent under Bill Belichick. Now, can the Tar Heels build on it against a state rival? Saturday offers a chance to continue forward progress while claiming the Victory Bell for the first time since 2023. Belichick went 0-3 against Duke, NC State and Wake Forest in his first year.

How will Duke respond to its first loss?

The Blue Devils were less than a minute away from improving to 5-0 before Georgia Tech rallied for the winning touchdown. Duke now faces another emotional test against its biggest rival, with a chance to avoid consecutive losses and remain in the thick of the ACC race.

How healthy is Duke RB Nate Sheppard?

There is no doubt Nate Sheppard has been the engine that makes Duke go this season. He’s one of the top rushers in FBS and has even been mentioned in early Heisman conversations. But he was less than 100 percent against Georgia Tech (still managing to rush for 99 yards and score twice).

The Blue Devils have listed Sheppard as questionable for Saturday’s game all week. If he can’t go, who will step up in his place? If he can go, how much of a workhorse back can he be?

On the flip side, UNC is dealing with its own injury issues, especially in the defensive secondary. This could be a coming-out-party type of game for Duke quarterback Walker Eget, who threw for 5,563 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2024 and 2025 while at San Jose State.

Eget threw 41 passes against Georgia Tech, completing 26 for 259 yards and a touchdown.

Duke loses kicker, linebacker for rest of the season

Duke coach Manny Diaz announced earlier in the week that starting kicker Cosme Salas and linebacker Elliott Schaper would be out for the rest of the 2026 season. Both suffered practice injuries that Diaz referred to as “freak” accidents.

Salas, a redshirt sophomore, had hit 4-of-5 field goals this season and made all 16 PATs. Freshman Gavin Strange will now assume primary kicking duties. Strange was 1-for-2 in field goals against Georgia Tech, missing a 33-yarder in the final seconds at Georgia Tech that would have tied the game.

Schaper, a sophomore, had made five tackles in Duke’s first four games. An injury also cut short his 2025 campaign.

Who will walk away with the Victory Bell

The Tar Heels and Blue Devils have been competing for this unique prize since 1948. North Carolina won five consecutive meetings from 2019-23, but Duke has claimed the last two, including a 32-25 victory in Chapel Hill last November. The Blue Devils will be seeking their first three-game winning streak in the rivalry since 2016-18.
