Millbrook quarterback Bryson Gray, who guided the Wildcats to the 8A state championship game last season, headlines another round of 2027 North Carolina high school football commitments to FCS programs.
Gray, a rising senior with an 18-2 record as a starter, pledged to Mercer University on July 31. The Bears, from Macon, GA, are the two-time defending Southern Conference champions.
Other recent FCS commitments include:
- Hough offensive lineman Treveon Pegues, who committed to North Carolina A&T
- Williams tight end/H-back Braeden Vetter, who became the second in-state prospect to pick Dartmouth.
- Georgia edge rusher Mason Wright, from East Paulding High, who also joined North Carolina A&T’s 2027 class late last month.

Millbrook’s Bryson Gray continues Triangle pipeline to Mercer
Millbrook star Bryson Gray picked Mercer over offers from UNC, East Tennessee State and North Carolina A&T. He told HighSchoolOT earlier this week that he committed to the Bears on his official visit. He announced it publicly on his mom’s birthday.
Mercer has been piloted by a North Carolina quarterback the past two seasons – former Rolesville standout Braden Atkinson in 2025 and former Cardinal Gibbons star Whitt Newbauer in 2024.
Atkinson threw for 3,611 passing yards and 34 TDs a year ago, winning the Jerry Rice Award. He is now on a Pac-12 roster, transferring to Oregon State.
Newbauer made the SoCon 2024 all-freshman team and currently plays at Oklahoma.
Gray is hoping to continue the trend of making an instant impact when he gets on campus for the 2027 season. Millbrook went 13-1 in 2025 with Gray at the helm, going undefeated until falling to Hough in the 8A title contest.
Gray finished the season 180-of-291 passing for 2,518 yards, 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, He threw for more than 1,000 yards as a sophomore.
Millbrook looks to be stocked again for this season. The Wildcats now have six rising seniors in addition to Gray who have announced commitments to Division I programs:
- Rashad Streets (Oregon)
- Quinton Cypher (Ohio State)
- Hayes Brawner (James Madison)
- Chase Sizer (Campbell)
- Darius Smith (Delaware)
- Markez Wilbert (North Carolina Central)
Hough’s Treveon Pegues will add braun to A&T’s offensive front
Second-year North Carolina A&T coach Shawn Gibbs has made a concerted effort to get the Aggies bigger, faster and stronger on the front lines as the team aims to be more competitive in their new conference home, the CAA. Treveon Pegues, 6-foot-8 and 315 pounds, certainly fits the bill.
Pegues was not ranked by national services like 247Sports at the time of his commitment but that could change in the months ahead.
He’s already garnered FBS attention, including gaining offers from schools like East Carolina, James Madison, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Liberty. He took an official visit to JMU in May.
Pegues played last season at Providence High in Charlotte but is transferring to Hough for his senior campaign.
Pegues became the latest Hough standout to announce a college commitment, joining South Carolina pledges Joshua Dobson and Davion Jones, Ethan Royal (Marshall), Moreno Fisher Jr. (Virginia), Jackson Heath (Army), Sincere Daye (Campbell) and Nori White (James Madison).
A&T also adds to its 2027 defense with pass rusher Mason Wright
Edge rusher Mason Wright from East Paulding High in Dallas, GA, also joined North Carolina A&T’s 2027 recruiting class last month. Wright had FBS offers from Bowling Green, FAU and UNLV, as well as a number of FCS offers including Gardner-Webb, Furman, Wofford and Mercer.
Wright collected 42 tackles a season ago, along with 13.0 tackles-for-loss, 4.5 sacks, 6 quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery. He was voted a captain by his teammates heading into 2026.
Versatile Braeden Vetter taking his talents to the Ivy League
Dartmouth landed its second North Carolina 2027 prospect when Burlington’s Braeden Vetter committed on July 20. Vetter from Williams High had more than a dozen offers, including multiple Ivy schools as well as Charlotte, Memphis, Coastal Carolina, Liberty and Arkansas State
The versatile Vetter is listed as a tight end and H-back. He made 19 catches for 265 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. He has come to be known for his blocking as much as his pass catching, and collected Mid Carolina all-conference honors at season’s end.
Vetter is also an all-conference goaltender on Williams’ lacrosse team and sports a GPA of 4.28.
