FINAL: NC State 73, Richmond 0
NC State didn’t merely beat Richmond in Friday night’s home opener. The Wolfpack produced the highest-scoring performance in Carter-Finley Stadium history.
NC State rolled to a 73-0 victory, piling up a school-record 734 yards of offense and eight rushing touchdowns. The Wolfpack scored 10 touchdowns, its most in a game since 1919, while posting its highest point total since 1936.
The game was delayed nearly 90 minutes by lightning early in the second quarter, but even that couldn’t slow the Wolfpack. NC State scored touchdowns on its first six possessions, led 49-0 by halftime and eventually played a shortened 10-minute fourth quarter.
Richmond, which came into the game ranked in the Top 25 in one national FCS poll, managed only 110 yards and six first downs, while NC State rushed for 428 yards and threw for another 306.
Among NC State’s individual leaders:
- CJ Bailey: 13-of-17 passing, 281 yards, 1 TD, plus a rushing touchdown.
- Duke Scott:128 rushing yards and 2 TDs, all of it in the first half. Scott’s 65-yard TD run came on the first play of NC State’s second possession.
- Will Wilson: The backup quarterback accounted for four touchdowns — three rushing TDs and one passing TD.
- Keenan Jackson:4 catches, 123 yards
NC State improved to 1-1 and got some of the bad taste out of its mouth from the Week 0 loss at Virginia (34-8). The Pack now will turn its attention to next Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt.
