App State wins fourth game in a row against East Carolina
App State 27, East Carolina 24: App State extended its winning streak over ECU to four games, holding off a late Pirates rally in Greenville. Malachi Singleton completed 20 of 28 passes for 267 yards without an interception, while Jaquari Lewis rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown.
App State led 24-10 in the third quarter before ECU closed the gap, but Dre Walker’s fourth-quarter interception helped preserve the victory. The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 and completed a sweep of the four-game series between the in-state rivals.
Gio Lopez runs in OT lift Wake Forest past Purdue 38-36
Gio Lopez scored on a 3-yard run and added the winning 2-point conversion as Wake Forest survived Purdue in double overtime. The Demon Deacons faced fourth-and-15 on their final OT possession before Lopez’s completion to Carlos Hernandez was ruled a first down following replay review. Lopez finished with 225 passing yards, 59 rushing yards and three total touchdowns as Wake improved to 2-0
Liberty rallies late to edge Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb came within minutes of an FBS upset before Liberty rallied for a 24-23 victory. The Runnin’ Bulldogs led 23-17 late in the fourth quarter before Liberty connected on a 54-yard touchdown pass with 2:41 remaining. Gardner-Webb drove into Liberty territory on its final possession but turned the ball over on downs.
Sabin McLaughlin returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Randy Young followed with a 65-yard touchdown run that gave Gardner-Webb a 20-13 halftime lead. Tre Yanez led the defense with 10 tackles and two sacks, while Ty Simpson went 3-for-3 on field goals, including a 41-yarder.
Johnson C. Smith rolls past Winston-Salem State
Johnson C. Smith beat Winston-Salem State 31-6, piling up 468 yards of offense and averaging 6.7 yards per play. Fabian Duncan continued his hot start to this season, rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, while Brian Lane caught two passes for 101 yards and two scores.
Jamaris Stevens led the Golden Bulls with 10 tackles, a sack and a 57-yard interception return. WSSU’s Jayvion Danzy scored on a 2-yard run with 4:30 remaining, the Rams’ first points of the season. The Golden Bulls improved to 2-1.
Rhode Island pulls away from short-handed Elon
Rhode Island scored 28 fourth-quarter points to beat Elon 31-10 after the teams entered the final period tied 3-3. Elon played without starting quarterback Brady Stober, who was ruled out before the game because of a hand injury sustained Sept. 5 against Davidson. The school said there is no definitive timetable for his return.
Shaw offense erupts in win over Ferrum
Shaw piled up 559 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per play in a 34-28 win over Ferrum. Alexander Marsh threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and added a rushing score. Fabian Diggs rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, including a 58-yard score, while Reggie King had 103 yards and a touchdown on just three receptions.
NC Wesleyan rolls to 42-0 shutout
North Carolina Wesleyan improved to 2-0 with a 42-0 victory over The Apprentice School, outgaining the Builders 425-141, averaging 8.2 yards per play and intercepting three passes. Braden Selvage completed 11 of 12 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score for the Battling Bishops. Jimmie West III caught six passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while Nahjir Seagraves rushed for 105 yards and a score on 13 carries.
