Another one of North Carolina’s top football prospects has found a college home in the SEC. Providence Day 2027 defensive lineman Griff Galloway announced his commitment to Kentucky and new coach Will Stein on Friday, May 22.

Galloway is considered the No. 18 overall prospect in North Carolina among rising seniors, according to 247Sports, and ranks No. 27 in the state in the 247Sports Composite.

Galloway had roughly 18 offers, with Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida, Notre Dame and Penn State among his other favorites, per 247Sports. Duke, UNC and Charlotte also were among his reported offers.

There was speculation that Clemson might land the 6-3, 240-pounder. Galloway’s father, Lonnie Galloway, is currently an offensive assistant on the Tigers’ staff. In the end, Kentucky made the biggest impression and earned the early commitment.

The SEC’s Wildcats are building a top-10 national class under Stein. Rolesville safety Marquis Bryant, the No. 9 ranked 2027 prospect in North Carolina, also pledged to the Wildcats in late April.

Galloway played a big role in Providence Day’s return to the top of NCISAA football in 2025. He posted 66 tackles and 13.5 tackles-for-loss for the state champion Chargers. Galloway kept quarterbacks on the run, logging 17 QB hurries and 10.5 sacks. He also recovered a fumble.

Galloway has been playing on Providence Day’s varsity since his freshman season. He finished with 79 tackles and 10 TFLs in 2024 and 60 more tackles and 9 TFLs in 2023.

Providence Day, which has consistently produced D1 level talent under coach Chad Grier in recent years, has two FBS commits in its 2027 class thus far. Safety Moses Poku-Kankam pledged to Rutgers in April.

North Carolina’s 2027 recruiting board keeps moving

There has been a run on top North Carolina Class of 2027 talent in recent weeks.

Garner linebacker Aroson Randle Jr. (ranked No. 6 by 247Sports) committed to Miami earlier this week. Other top 20 players like East Lincoln tight end Jaxon Dollar (Georgia), Seventy-First defensive lineman John Archer (South Carolina), Rolesville wide receiver Anthony Roberts (Virginia Tech) and Jordan wide receiver Xavier Perkins (Virginia Tech) all announced their college decisions in the past month.

From 247Sports latest rankings, seven of the state’s top 10 players – and 11 of the top 20 – have now made their college plans official. No one inside the top 20 is committed to an in-state college program.
