Gardner-Webb has suspended first-year head football coach Kris McCullough, according to a report Sunday evening from FootballScoop.
FootballScoop reported that special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Pete Bennett is expected to serve as interim head coach during McCullough’s absence.
Gardner-Webb had not publicly announced a suspension or coaching change as of Sunday evening. The school’s official football staff directory continued to list McCullough as head coach and Bennett in his current assistant coaching roles.
The report comes hours after FootballScoop reported Sunday afternoon that Gardner-Webb was evaluating its options regarding what the outlet described as off-field allegations involving McCullough. No details about the nature of the allegations have been publicly disclosed.
McCullough was hired by Gardner-Webb in December after three seasons as head coach at Division II Texas-Permian Basin. He led the Falcons to two NCAA playoff appearances, including a run to the national quarterfinals and an 11-win season in 2025.
McCullough previously spent the 2022 season as head coach at East Central, leading the Tigers to a 9-3 record and a Heritage Bowl victory. He brought a 37-13 career record to Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs opened McCullough’s first season Thursday with a 35-17 road loss to No. 17 Austin Peay.
Bennett has been on the Gardner-Webb coaching staff since 2024.
Gardner-Webb is scheduled to return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, at Wofford. The Runnin’ Bulldogs play their first home game Sept. 19 against North Carolina Central.
