🏈 FINAL: North Carolina 15, TCU 10
Amid all the noise and questions surrounding North Carolina football entering the 2026 season, the Tar Heels found something Saturday in Dublin.
A way to win.
UNC repeatedly survived situations where the game seemed to be begging the Tar Heels to give it away, leaning on a defense that delivered one critical stop after another in a 15-10 victory over TCU at Aviva Stadium.
That alone felt like a significant change from a year ago when the Heels slogged through a disappointing 4-8 finish in Bill Belichick’s debut as head coach.
Too often during a disappointing 2025 season, Carolina found itself in games that were begging the Tar Heels to seize control — and couldn’t do it. Saturday presented the opposite challenge. UNC lost two fumbles, failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities and repeatedly left the door open for TCU.
This time, the Tar Heels held its ground.
TCU scored 10 points in the first quarter and didn’t score again. The Horned Frogs finished 1-for-5 on fourth down and twice came away empty after reaching the UNC 10 in the second half.
The biggest test came late in the third quarter.
With UNC protecting a 15-10 lead, running back Benjamin Hall fumbled at his own 24, handing TCU the kind of opportunity that can flip a close game. The Horned Frogs drove to the 5 and faced fourth-and-1.
Carolina’s defense didn’t budge.
Jeremy Payne was dropped for a 1-yard loss, giving UNC possession at its own 6.
Then the offense responded in a way that mattered even without scoring.
The Tar Heels marched 70 yards on 13 plays, consuming nearly six minutes and flipping the field before Aeron Burrell missed a 42-yard field goal. TCU got another chance and drove 66 yards over nearly eight minutes, reaching the UNC 10 with just over four minutes remaining.
Again, Carolina needed a stop.
Again, it got one.
Jaden Craig’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, and UNC took possession with 4:05 remaining. The Horned Frogs never touched the football again. A 10-point underdog, the Tar Heels instead became the first FBS team in the nation to post a win.

- Carolina answers immediately: After TCU took a 10-3 lead late in the first quarter, Billy Edwards Jr. helped UNC respond with a seven-play, 70-yard drive. Jaylen McGill finished it with a 9-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10.
- A bizarre safety puts UNC ahead: TCU’s punt team mishandled a fourth-down play late in the second quarter, resulting in a safety that gave Carolina a 12-10 halftime lead. The Heels never lost the lead from there.

LB Xavier Lewis (UNC): Seven tackles, a whopping 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also combined with Isaiah Johnson on the enormous fourth-and-1 stop at the UNC 5.
QB Billy Edwards Jr. (UNC): A solid game-management performance – 16-of-28 for 232 yards, no touchdowns and, importantly in this kind of game, no interceptions. He also delivered the 25-yard completion to Jelani Thurman that helped UNC kill the clock on its final possession.
WR Jelani Thurman (UNC): Four catches for a game-high 94 yards, including gains of 35 and 25 yards.
DL Melkart Abou Jaoude (UNC): Four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble that gave UNC the short field for what proved to be the game’s final points.

After an offseason filled with questions about what this team would look like in 2026 in year two of the Bill Belichick era, that’s a pretty meaningful place to start.
