πŸ” What to Know About App State Football vs. Old Dominion

App State will honor 2006 national title team

Saturday’s game will include an on-field recognition of Appalachian State’s 2006 national championship team. After losing its opener at NC State, the Mountaineers won 14 straight games to capture their second of three consecutive Division I-AA (now FCS) national titles.Β

Armanti Edwards was the dynamic starting quarterback for the 2006 squad, which scored 528 points. Running back Kevin Richardson scored four touchdowns in the 2006 title game, a 28-17 win over UMass.

Malachi Singleton settling in as App State’s quarterback

Transfer quarterback Malachi Singleton ranks among the Sun Belt Conference and FBS leaders in several passing categories so far this season:

  • 301.5 passing yards per game: 1st in the Sun Belt, 7th in FBS
  • 24.0 completions per game: 9th in FBS
  • 72.7 completion percentage: 2nd Sun Belt, 11th in FBSΒ

Singleton has thrown for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns against only one interception. He has a passer rating of 165.0. He also has rushed for two touchdowns.

Weather could be a factor again

Appalachian State’s home game against Charlotte on Sept. 19 was delayed for several hours due to storms and lightning. The contest started after 9 p.m. and ended at 12:32 a.m.

With a tropical system expected to venture north from the Gulf over the weekend, weather could again play a role. The matchup remains on schedule to start at 1 p.m., but effects from the storm could bring periods of heavy rain to Boone and Western North Carolina on Saturday.

Home, sweet home

Appalachian State has yet to leave the state of North Carolina for game action. The Mountaineers opened at home against Maine over Labor Day weekend, played at East Carolina, hosted Charlotte and then traveled to NC State during September.

App State will finally venture out of the state – but not very far – next Friday night against Coastal Carolina from Conway, SC.
