East Carolina football will celebrate homecoming and open American Conference play Saturday against a Rice team that presents a distinctly different challenge for the Pirates.
The Owls (1-4, 0-1 American) operate a shotgun triple-option offense that ranks among the nation’s most productive rushing attacks. Rice averages 243.8 yards per game on the ground, led by quarterback Jacurri Brown, who has rushed for 495 yards and four touchdowns.
That could present problems for an ECU team that while decent against the run, ranks last nationally in time of possession and next-to-last in third-down conversions when it has the ball. The Pirates (2-2) are coming off a bye week and a 42-9 victory over North Carolina Central, a game that saw Emory Williams take over as starting quarterback and throw for 341 yards and three touchdowns.
Kickoff at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville is scheduled for 4 p.m., with ESPN+ providing the broadcast.

🔍 What to Know About East Carolina Football vs. Rice
East Carolina will open American Conference play and celebrate homecoming
The Pirates are off to a 2-2 start and had a bye week following their 42-9 win over North Carolina Central. With the non-conference slate behind them, East Carolina now sets its sights on making noise in the American Conference.
ECU was seen by some as a dark horse contender in the American in the preseason, though coach Blake Harrell’s team has been off to a somewhat sluggish start as a roster full of newcomers adjusts and gels.
This will be homecoming and letterwinners’ weekend at East Carolina.
Emory Williams set to make his second start as ECU’s QB
After struggling with consistency in the passing game under Mitch Griffis, the Pirates made a change at quarterback for the North Carolina Central contest two weeks ago. Emory Williams delivered a solid performance against the FCS Eagles, completing 25-of-36 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns.
Williams, a transfer from Miami, will get the start again this week, hoping to continue jump-starting a Pirates offense which is far below 2025 numbers in terms of production and points.
A homecoming of sorts for Rice coach Scott Abell
Abell coached at Davidson from 2018 to 2024 before taking over in Houston last season. He went 47-28 over seven seasons at Davidson – becoming the school’s all-time wins leader. The Wildcats claimed two Pioneer Football League titles and made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA FCS playoffs (2020-22).
This will be Abell’s second trip back to North Carolina since leaving Davidson. His Owls won at Charlotte 28-17 during the 2025 campaign on their way to a 5-7 record.
Rice employs a unique offense
Abell thrived at Davidson using what’s known as the Gun Triple-Option. Unlike traditional option offenses, the quarterback starts in shotgun formation and not under center. The approach blends option principles with modern spread-offense concepts.
Davidson led FCS football in rushing in six of Abell’s seven seasons at the helm, averaging 428.5 yards per game in 2018 and 300+ in four other years.
In a 2018 game against San Diego, the Wildcats rushed for 789 yards. In another 2018 game, Davidson amassed 685 rushing yards and 964 total yards against Division III Guilford in a 91-61 win.
Rice is banking on the unique approach to work at the FBS level in one of the top Group of Six conferences. Abell is 6-11 so far as the Owls’ head coach, though Rice has been competitive in losses this season to UTSA, Western Michigan and Fresno State. Quarterback Jacurri Brown leads the Owls’ offense, rushing for 495 yards and throwing for 410.

📈 What the Numbers Say
Time of possession could be a major factor. East Carolina ranks last nationally in time of possession, averaging just 24:18 per game. Rice’s shotgun triple-option offense is built around running the football and sustaining drives. The Owls average 243.8 rushing yards per game, although their own third-down struggles (31.7 percent) have limited their ability to consistently extend possessions.
East Carolina also struggles on third down. The Pirates have only converted on 26 percent of their third-down chances, next-to-last in FBS (137th).
Rice has the 11th-most prolific rushing attack in FBS football, averaging 243.8 yards per game. That’s fourth-best in the American Conference, which also features other option-based teams like Army (334.2 ypg) and Navy (277.8). The Owls will be matched up against an ECU defense that allows 142.5 yards per game, which is middle of the pack for FBS (73rd).
The Owls rank next-to-last (137th) in the FBS in passing yards per game. Rice has completed just 38 passes through five games for 427 total yards (85.4 per contest). Though the Owls haven’t shown it too much yet, the aerial attack can be a dangerous aspect of the Gun Triple Option. If defenses overplay the run, the potential for long throws over the top can be there.
Rice’s Jacurri Brown is the second-leading rusher in the nation among quarterbacks. Only West Virginia’s Michael Hawkins Jr. (574) has more rushing yardage than Brown’s 495.
Rice has missed four of six field goal attempts. Opponents have hit six of seven.
Both Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams have thrown three TD passes for the Pirates. Williams has 386 passing yards on the season and has been more efficient than Griffis, completing 67.4 percent of his passes (31-of-46). Griffis has completed only 53.7 (36-of-67).
