🔍 What to Know About Boston College at Duke

1. Duke’s defense has been a strength. The Blue Devils allow just 16.0 points and 301.3 yards per game. They’ve held four of their seven opponents to 16 points or fewer, including Virginia in last week’s 19-16 victory.

2. Boston College has been a positive surprise. The Eagles were picked 16th out of 17 ACC teams during preseason balloting. BC has exceeded expectations thus far, beating Pitt and Georgia Tech in its two most recent outings.

3. BC brings a solid running game. The Eagles rushed for 399 yards in their 49-27 victory at Georgia Tech, finishing with 500 yards of total offense. Quarterback Mason McKenzie is a true dual threat, amassing 614 rushing yards with five touchdowns to go with 1,363 passing yards. Duke’s defense, allowing only 107.1 rushing yards per game, faces an intriguing challenge.

4. Nate Sheppard continues to be Duke’s offensive centerpiece. The Blue Devils’ sophomore running back averages 125 rushing yards per game and has scored 13 total touchdowns — nine rushing and four receiving. Last week against Virginia, Sheppard threw what would be the winning touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

5. Turnovers could decide this matchup. Boston College has intercepted 10 passes but thrown seven interceptions of its own. Defensive back Charlie Comella has picked off four passes in seven games, while teammate KP Price has three interceptions.

Duke has thrown just three interceptions while recovering five opponent fumbles. The Eagles’ ball-hawking secondary could be a major factor.

6. BC-Duke Coaching Connections. Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien served on the Duke staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2005-06. BC defensive coordinator Ted Roof was the Blue Devils linebackers coach from 1990-93, defensive coordinator in 2002-03 and the head coach from 2004-2007.

7. A Duke Halloween home game memory. Flash back to Halloween night 2015, and the Blue Devils lost to Miami 30-27 in one of the wildest – and controversial – finishes in modern ACC history. The Devils went ahead 27-24 with six seconds to play on a Thomas Sirk QB sneak. But Miami, using eight laterals, returned the kickoff for a touchdown. The officiating crew reviewed the play and upheld the TD, but the ACC later suspended the refs for missing several calls that would have nullified the score.
