Thursday night college football: ACC teams sweep openers

The college season opens with a trio of in-state showdowns

The college football season kicks off Thursday night with five games involving North Carolina teams.

North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest each won their football openers Thursday night, kicking off the new college season in exciting fashion.

The Tar Heels survived Minnesota 19-17 in a game that finished after midnight, when the Gophers pushed a last-second field goal wide right.

NC State erupted in the fourth quarter to beat scrappy Western Carolina 38-21. Wake Forest put up the biggest numbers on the scoreboard in a 45-13 triumph over North Carolina A&T.

Gardner-Webb lost a nailbiter in Cris Reisert’s debut as the Bulldogs’s head coach. Mars Hill, meanwhile, took it on the chin against No. 14 Delta State in D2 action.
