Appalachian State football was picked to finish sixth in the Sun Belt East Division in the conference’s preseason coaches poll released Monday, while three Mountaineers earned preseason all-conference honors.
Defensive lineman Aiden Benton and linebacker Colton Phares both made the first-team All-Sun Belt lineup. Offensive lineman Tyriq Poindexter was selected to the second team.
The preseason poll, all-conference teams and individual awards were announced leading into Sun Belt Football Media Days, which will take place Wednesday and Thursday, July 15-16, in New Orleans.
💭 What Does It Mean?
App State’s sixth-place projection in the Sun Belt East Division will be tough to stomach for many Mountaineers fans used to seeing their team at the top of these lists over the past decade.
Yet the preseason poll also highlights an interesting contrast.
While league coaches don’t expect App State to contend for the East Division title, they clearly respect the individual talent returning to Boone. Defensive lineman Aiden Benton and linebacker Colton Phares were both first-team preseason selections, while offensive lineman Tyriq Poindexter earned second-team honors.
For coach Dowell Loggains, the challenge now becomes turning individual talent into team success. If the Mountaineers outperform their preseason projection this fall, it will likely begin with the veteran leaders recognized by the conference on Monday.

The coaches voting predicts a repeat of last year’s Sun Belt championship game, won by James Madison over Troy 31-14. The Dukes advanced to the College Football Playoff after the victory.
Appalachian State is coming off a 5-8 season, 2-6 in Sun Belt play. The Mountaineers will play all six East Division rivals this fall, along with games against the projected bottom two teams in the West, South Alabama and Louisiana Monroe.
App State All-Sun Belt Selections
Colton Phares, a redshirt-junior linebacker, was one of the Sun Belt’s most productive tacklers in 2025, compiling 101 stops along with 9.5 tackles-for-loss, two sacks and three interceptions. He landed on the Sun Belt’s 2025 all-conference second team.
Aiden Benton, a redshirt junior defensive lineman, started seven games during the back stretch of the season. He finished 2025 with 41 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, 4.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. He also forced two fumbles.
Tyriq Poindexter is a redshirt senior offensive lineman. He only played one game a season ago, missing the rest of the year with injury. He transferred to App State after playing at VMI from 2021-24.
