Appalachian State football has been one of North Carolina’s most successful programs during its nine-decade history. The 2000s have been especially rich.
The Mountaineers won three FCS titles from 2005-07, recorded one of the most notable upsets in college football history at Michigan during that ‘07 run and then became an instant contender in the Sun Belt Conference upon moving to FBS in 2014.
But the past two seasons have been notably lean in Boone. A notable run of eight straight winning seasons, five bowl victories in a row (2015-20) and four consecutive Sun Belt Championships (shared or outright, 2016-19) has given way to two losing seasons in a row – and deeper concerns about the future of the program.
Though it is only year two of the Dowell Loggains head coaching era, 2026 feels like a crossroads season for App State football.
Whether the Mountaineers are simply experiencing a temporary reset or facing a more permanent challenge in the rapidly changing era of NIL, transfer portal and college sports restructuring may begin to reveal itself this fall.

Five Things To Know
App State has rebuilt its roster aggressively and thoroughly
More than 60 newcomers – transfers and high school recruits – have come aboard to help replace the 40+ who left in the off-season. The transfer list includes 10 defensive backs, five wide receivers and a pair of QBs to address immediate needs in those position groups.
The Mountaineers’ 2026 prep recruiting class led the Sun Belt.
247Sports ranked the 2026 class 59th nationally. Five of Rivals’ top 10 recruits from the Sun Belt Conference signed with App State. The 2027 class also is off to a solid start.
Head coach Dowell Loggains replaced himself as offensive coordinator
New hire Mike Anthony served in multiple roles at TCU from 2023-25 under noted offensive mind Kendal Briles. He had just taken a job at South Carolina before changing course and heading to Boone in February.
App State’s non-conference schedule is packed with compelling in-state rivalry games
After hosting Maine in the season opener, the Mountaineers visit East Carolina, host Charlotte and then travel to NC State before jumping into conference play. If you’re an App State fan, that’s a three-pack of games worth the travel and price.
The Mountaineers will play three non-Saturday games in 2026
The conference schedule includes two Friday games (at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 16 and at South Alabama on Nov. 27) and one Thursday contest (vs. James Madison on Oct. 22). All three are prime opportunities in front of nationally televised ESPN audiences.

Quotable
“In recent history, I don’t know that the wins and expectations have met. It’s about coming to grips with this new world of college football, where you almost start with an entirely new team.” – opposing Sun Belt assistant coach to Athlon Sports.
“This year just 5 starters are back but it is year two for HC Loggains and most indicators are pointing up.” – football analyst Phil Steele
“With most teams going into the second season under a head coach, it’s easy to see where things might be better and stronger, but there’s so much turnover and so many moving parts that this is one of those predictions that might change wildly just before the season.” – Pete Fiutak, College Football News, after picking a 5-7 season for App State
Why Appalachian State Could Surprise
- Head coach Dowell Loggains rebuilt the roster with intention and purpose, bringing in the second-best high school + transfer class among Group of Six schools (trailing only Boise State)
- New playmakers abound, including dual-threat quarterback Malachi Singleton and former Gardner-Webb receiver Chris Lofton.
- Linebacker Colton Phares is one of the best in the Sun Belt, logging more than 100 tackles a year ago.
- App State sold out its season tickets yet again, giving the Mountaineers one of the biggest home-field advantages in the Sun Belt and North Carolina college football.
Why Appalachian State Could Struggle
- Relying on so many transfers and newcomers raises continuity and chemistry questions
- The early schedule (ECU, NC State) doesn’t offer many chances to stack wins and build momentum
- A lot of sloppiness and lack of generating turnovers has to be cleaned up from 2025
- The Mountaineers have to retool a defense that was among the worst in the Sun Belt last season
The Number: 65
Newcomers into Appalachian State’s roster following the 2026 high school recruiting and transfer portal cycle.
The Mountaineers added 27 enrollees from the high school/JUCO ranks and 38 transfers – a massive roster overhaul after a disappointing five-win season in 2025. The high school class ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference.
Biggest Losses
Quarterbacks A.J. Swann, J.J. Kohl and Matthew Wilson
Almost the entire QB room hit the portal either before or after the Mountaineers’ bowl game.
DT Saint Farrior
The 340-pound lane-clogger from Durham (Hillside HS) played in all 13 games but caught the attention of SEC programs, transferring to Auburn.
RB Rashod Dubinion
Arkansas transfer rushed for 868 yards in his lone season with the Mountaineers before declaring for the NFL Draft. He was especially effective early in the season.

👀 Who Can Change Game Days in Boone?
QB Malachi Singleton
He could be the key that makes the engine go on offense. He’s a true dual-threat with Power Four playing experience in both the Big Ten (Purdue) and SEC (Arkansas).
LB Colton Phares (Beaufort, SC)
Two-year starter led App State in tackles (101) and interceptions (3) last season. Phares came up with key fourth-quarter stops in wins against Marshall and Oregon State.
RB Jaquari Lewis
The preseason all-conference performer (Phil Steele) finished 2025 on a strong note, rushing for 283 yards and two touchdowns in his final two outings.
DE Aiden Benton
Benton finished second on the team with 4.5 sacks in 2025 while adding 41 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss and two forced fumbles. If the Mountaineers are going to generate more pressure and create more takeaways this fall, Benton will be a major reason why.
WR Chris Lofton
The former Gardner-Webb star is back in the Sun Belt Conference after starting his college career at James Madison. Lofton was one of the top receiving threats in the FCS last season in Boiling Springs (934 yards and 5 TDs for all-conference honors).
CB Josh Williams
The Dayton transfer could be just what the doctor ordered in the secondary, picking off six passes last season with one return for a touchdown against Davidson. App State’s ‘D’ needs more ball-hawks.
K James London
Never underestimate the power of a kicker in close games. App lost three by 3 points or less in 2025. London was a third-team All-American in 2024 at Murray State, hitting 14 of 19 field goals – including six from 50+ yards.
🆕 Newcomers to Know
High School
EDGE Jordan Harris (Maumelle, AR)
The No. 13 overall player from Arkansas, Harris stands 6-foot-7 and compiled 27 tackles-for-loss, 15.5 sacks and 50 total tackles during his senior season.
TE Jamel House (Newberry, SC)
Productive pass-catching tight end/wide receiver (6-4, 240) had more than 1,800 receiving yards during his prep career.
EDGE Manny Lewis (Waxhaw, NC)
HighSchoolOT All-State performer (2024) totalled 180 tackles, 39.5 tackles-for-loss, 32 sacks and 61 quarterback hurries during sophomore, junior and senior seasons combined.
Transfers
LB Alex Mitchell (Murfreesboro, TN)
Played just four games for Middle Tennessee in 2025 but piled up impressive stats in three seasons at Chattanooga in 2022-24 – 194 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, five forced fumbles and three interceptions in 34 games.
RB Treyaun Webb (Jacksonville, FL)
Former 4-star prospect was ranked the No. 16 running back in the nation by Rivals.com. Played in 15 games at Florida, finishing with 256 yards, 3 TDs.
DB Joe Reddish (Charlotte, NC)
Former Independence High standout began his college career at Wingate then made two starts at Virginia Tech last year (16 tackles, 2.0 TFLs for the season).
Games That Could Define the Season
App State at East Carolina (Sept. 12)
Why it matters: App State has won all three meetings in the 2020s, but East Carolina has improved dramatically since the most recent victory in 2024. A win in Greenville could be a solid launching point for Loggains’ second season. A sound defeat could hurt early confidence and validate concerns fans have about the trajectory of the program.
Old Dominion at App State (Oct. 10)
Why it matters: The Mountaineers will have a bye week leading into their conference opener, which feels like a must-win scenario with rivals Coastal Carolina, James Maidson and Georgia Southern looming afterward.
App State at Georgia Southern (Oct. 31)
Why it matters: The Mountaineers’ long-time rival dating back to their FCS days beat them twice a year ago, including in a bowl game that App State got invited to after other schools opted out. Getting back on top in this series will be key to restoring App State’s luster – and to the team’s 2026 bowl pursuits.

⭐ Toughest Test: Visiting NC State on Sept. 26. App State has never beaten the Pack in football and will be a heavy underdog for this one. But we know App’s history in games like this.
⚠️ Trap Game: The Charlotte rivalry game (Sept. 19) comes between ECU and NC State.
💥 Best Upset Chance: Conference favorite James Madison comes to The Rock on a Thursday night in late October, a prime nationally televised stage for the Mountaineers to work their giant-killing magic.

Three Questions Facing Appalachian State
Can Appalachian State still be Appalachian State?
Few schools have executed a transition from FCS to FBS any better than the Mountaineers. But college football has changed dramatically since App State made the jump in 2014. Culture and tradition alone don’t attract and keep players on campus like they used to. App has to figure out how to forge a new path to continue being one of the darling programs in the Group of Six.
Can Malachi Singleton stabilize the quarterback position?
Loggains restocked the position with multiple types of signal callers, also adding transfers Henry Hasselbeck (UCLA) and Tommy Ulatowski (Kent State/Kennesaw State). But indications coming out of spring are that the job is Singleton’s to lose. The former 4-star prospect was considered one of the top dual-threat signal callers in the country coming out of high school. He certainly has the tools.
Can the defense become respectable again?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be elite. But the Mountaineers have to do a better job of getting opponents off the field, creating turnovers and swinging the time of possession battle back to favor the offense. Three close losses a year ago could have changed the narrative dramatically had they gone the other way.
Best Case/Worst Case
Best: The rushing game gets untracked, holes get patched in last year’s porous defense and App State emerges again as a Sun Belt East team the rest of the league needs to worry about.
Worst: The massive roster overhaul doesn’t gel, a bulk of the Sun Belt Conference passes App State by, and the Mountaineers suffer their third losing season in a row.
NC Football News Prediction
Record: 6-6
Conference Finish: 4-4
Bowl Projection: Myrtle Beach Bowl, where they will be matched up with an American Conference or MAC opponent.
We believe just enough pieces will fit together this season to get App State to that magical six-win bowl eligibility plateau.
The Final Word
This feels like a make-or-break season for Appalachian State. Not that the Mountaineers have to win the Sun Belt per se. But it feels like they do have to make enough positive strides to indicate the foundation is secure and that the program is getting back to the standard expected from App State football.
Coach Loggains had a distinctive plan when he attacked the off-season and he executed it well. He loaded up on defensive backs and proven playmakers from the portal for this season, then stocked the offensive and defensive lines with high school standouts to build for the future.
Everything about Appalachian State’s 2026 season comes down to one question: Did Dowell Loggains find enough answers in one offseason to put one of college football’s proudest Group of Five programs back on the path its fans expect?
