Johnson C. Smith Rolls Past Shaw 49-6, Stays Unbeaten in CIAA Play

Damien Mazil threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Johnson C. Smith overwhelmed Shaw 49-6 Friday night in a CIAA football game moved up a day because of the threat of severe weather.

The Golden Bulls improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, piling up 518 yards of offense while holding the Bears to 212.

Mazil completed 12 of 18 passes for 301 yards without an interception. He also rushed for 29 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown late in the first half.

Fabian Duncan added 95 rushing yards and 57 receiving yards, scoring on a 45-yard reception and a 2-yard run.

Johnson C. Smith scored touchdowns on its first six possessions and never punted. The Golden Bulls led 14-0 after one quarter, 28-0 at halftime and 42-6 entering the fourth.

Mazil connected with four different receivers for touchdowns: Duncan, Kamarro Edmonds (24 yards), Reginald Daniel (57 yards) and Brian Lane (13 yards). Backup quarterback Parker McQuarrie added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Christian Rutledge in the fourth quarter.

Shaw (4-3, 2-3 CIAA) struggled to finish drives, coming away empty on both of its red-zone opportunities. The Bears missed a 20-yard field goal in the first quarter and were stopped on downs at the JCSU 5 late in the second.

Fabian Diggs scored Shaw’s only touchdown on a 23-yard run in the third quarter.

Vincent Hill led the Golden Bulls’ defense with 11 tackles, including a share of a sack. JCSU recorded three sacks and held Shaw to 81 passing yards.

The Golden Bulls remain unbeaten in CIAA competition as they continue their push toward the conference championship race.
