A two-time state football champion from Kernersville East Forsyth High, Joseph Brown Jr. had his coming out party at the collegiate level Saturday.
The Guilford College senior is our Best In State Division III offensive player of the week. Brown rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in his latest outing, powering the Quakers past Methodist 39-21. Brown came into the season having appeared in only four games for Guilford, gaining 31 yards in spot action a year ago.
Brown averaged 6.3 yards per carry against Methodist. He had a long run of 29 yards and two touchdown scampers of 25 yards — one in the first quarter and one in the second. Guilford built at 32-0 lead by halftime.
Brown’s teammate Nick Iannone is our Best In State D3 Defensive Player of the Week. Iannone, a sophomore from Wellington, Fla., followed up a nine-tackle, two-sack, one-interception performance in the opener against Greensboro with 13 total tackles Saturday to lead all players.
Iannone was a third-team All-Old Dominion Conference player last season, finishing with 84 tackles. His 13 hits against Methodist gave him a new career high in that category.
Guilford’s Burke Nettles, our D3 Special Teams Player of the Week, had a busy Saturday. He kicked field goals from 39 and 41 yards, hit three PATs, punted four times for an average of 41 yards (with a long of 60) and kicked off eight times (with four touchbacks). He even recorded one rush for 23 yards on a fourth-down play and made a tackle.
Nettles, from Kingsland, Ga., did not see any game action for the Quakers a year ago. He played in eight games in 2021. So far this season, Nettles is 3-of-5 on field goals and 6-of-8 with PATs.
