Latest NCCU football recruiting class heavy on in-state players

Coach Trei Oliver: ‘Might be the best class we’ve had since I’ve been here’

North Carolina Central unveiled a 26-member football recruiting class during National Signing Day on Wednesday. The Eagles landed 14 prospects who list North Carolina as their home state, including four from Durham.

“The big thing about this class is that they are good young men and they fit our culture,” Eagles coach Trei Oliver said during an interview posted on social media Wednesday. “These are not guys we just found over the last week or two and tried to sign them to fill a class. We’ve been recruiting these guys, some of them, for well over a year now … You want guys who want to be a part of your program.

“This might be the best class we’ve had since I’ve been here … It’s about a relationship. You want someone who wants you.”

NCCU is coming off a 9-3 season, which included the school’s first trip to the FCS playoffs. Here is a list of the incoming players, courtesy NCCU athletics.

The Eagles brought in two quarterbacks with this class. Walker Harris, who backed up conference player of the year Davius Richard this past season, is the expected QB1 going into spring ball, but Oliver said “he’s going to get pushed” by other signal callers on the roster.
