UNC, NC State, Duke and Wake Forest football teams combined for five new commitments on June 8.

The Tar Heels got their 2027 quarterback. The Wolfpack beefed up the offensive line. The Blue Devils added a Texas defensive back, and the Deacs landed a pair of versatile athletes.

While signing day remains months away, each program’s 2027 high school class is beginning to develop a distinct identity. Here are our observations during this crucial stretch, plus details on the latest additions:

Quick Hits: Latest Commitments (June 8)

North Carolina lands Texas quarterback

North Carolina secured its quarterback for the 2027 cycle when Summer Creek signal-caller Noah Spinks from Humble, TX, announced his commitment.

Spinks didn’t possess an eye-popping offer sheet but his junior season stats proved impressive – 3,690 passing yards and 42 passing touchdowns while leading Summer Creek to a 12-2 record and a Texas Class 6A Division II state quarterfinal appearance.

The three-star prospect chose the Tar Heels over Utah following an official visit to Chapel Hill. Spinks became UNC’s seventh known commitment in the 2027 class.

NC State adds Florida offensive lineman with ‘Yellowstone’ ties

The Wolfpack continued to build their offensive line room with a commitment from interior lineman Colt Hauser from Cardinal Newman in West Palm Beach, FL.

Hauser, a three-star prospect per 247Sports, helped Cardinal Newman capture a Florida 1A state championship last season. He selected NC State over offers from rivals Duke and North Carolina as well as West Virginia and others.

He became the Wolfpack’s 13th commitment and third offensive line pledge in the class. Hauser is the son of actor Cole Hauser, famous for his role as Rip Wheeler in the Yellowstone TV series.

Duke continues building its defensive backfield

Duke added one of the more intriguing prospects of the weekend when Kasen Jammer of Angleton High (TX) committed following an official visit.

Jammer is the son of former NFL first-round draft pick Quentin Jammer. The younger Jammer held offers from Baylor, Arizona, UCLA, Utah, Maryland and Boston College among others. Jammer also posted a 10.76-second 100-meter time during the spring track season.

His pledge pushed Duke’s class to 16 commitments, most in the state so far.

Wake Forest adds two more athletes

Wake Forest continued its recruiting momentum with commitments from safety Zy Tassin of Crestview High in Florida and wide receiver Carter Hawkins of Timberland High in St. Stephen, SC.

Tassin chose the Demon Deacons over offers from UCF, Kansas State, Mississippi State and West Virginia after starring on both sides of the ball as a junior.

Hawkins, meanwhile, is a multi-sport standout who recently set a school record in the triple jump.

Wake Forest now has 14 commitments in its class.

What we’re seeing from the Big Four

Duke: Building a national class

If there is one thing that stands out about Duke’s recruiting class, it is geography.

The reigning ACC champs have accepted commitments from prospects in Texas, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia while also adding three North Carolina players – most among our in-state FBS programs.

The approach reflects a staff willing to recruit nationally rather than relying primarily on regional ties.

The class also features a number of highly productive high school players, including:

  • Tennessee tight end Parker Newman (1,000+ receiving yards in 2025)
  • Georgia running back Javarris Warner (1,800+ rushing yards over two seasons),
  • Southern Durham safety Lance Henderson 919 receiving yards, 311 rushing yards, 88 tackles in 2025)
  • Pfafftown edge rusher King Kalama (29.5 tackles-for-loss in 2025 for Reagan High).

At this stage, Duke’s class appears to be built around proven production and a nationwide recruiting footprint.

NC State: Building from the trenches

NC State’s class looks exactly like what many fans have come to expect from the Wolfpack and coach Dave Doeren.

The group already includes three offensive linemen, two tight ends, multiple front-seven defenders and the nation’s top-ranked kicker according to Kohl’s Kicking.

The Wolfpack’s recruiting efforts have been heavily concentrated in Georgia and Florida, and many of the commits arrive with eye-catching production.

Whether it is legacy quarterback recruit Gunner Rivers throwing 46 touchdown passes, linebacker Jake Godfree piling up hundreds of career tackles or edge rusher Jadell Carter recording 17 sacks as a junior, the theme is consistent.

The Wolfpack appear focused on physical players with proven résumés.

Wake Forest: Betting on athletes

No class may have a clearer identity than Wake Forest’s.

The Demon Deacons continue to add prospects with multi-sport backgrounds and position flexibility.

Tassin started at both quarterback and safety. Logan Steele threw touchdown passes, ran for scores and intercepted nine passes. Carter Hawkins brings track-and-field credentials, while several other commitments have experience contributing in multiple phases of the game.

The strategy suggests Wake Forest is placing a premium on athleticism and versatility as Jake Dickert shapes his 2027 recruiting class following a successful nine-win debut last fall.

UNC: Trusting evaluation over rankings

North Carolina’s class remains the smallest of the four groups at only seven commits (and with two decommits), but it may also be the most intriguing.

Several Tar Heel commitments arrive with impressive production but more modest recruiting profiles and “star rankings.”

Spinks threw for 3,690 yards and 43 touchdowns last season with only five interceptions, yet UNC and Utah were his only Power 4 offers. He’s not ranked nationally in the top 100 for quarterbacks. Tar Heel coaches obviously see something they like.

Running back Isaiah Stephens accounted for more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage last season. Linebacker Tasheem Butler recorded 138 tackles and 34 TFLs.

The offer sheets and rankings may not always jump off the page, but the statistics often do.

That could be an early indication that Bill Belichick and his staff are placing significant trust in their own evaluations rather than chasing recruiting rankings.

Early identities are emerging

It remains far too early to declare winners and losers in the 2027 recruiting cycle.

Still, the first half of June has revealed some interesting trends.

Duke is recruiting nationally. NC State is building around physicality and production. Wake Forest is stockpiling athletes. North Carolina appears willing to trust its evaluations.

The classes will continue to evolve throughout the summer, but the outlines of each program’s recruiting philosophy are beginning to come into focus.
