North Carolina’s 2027 high school football recruiting class is starting to take clearer shape.
Two months after NC Football News introduced its first consensus rankings for the class, the top of the board remains steady. Joshua Dobson, Jaxon Dollar, Xavier Hasan and Rashad Streets still hold the first four spots in our latest update, giving the list a familiar look at its summit.
Behind them, though, the board is moving. New prospects have entered the rankings, several players have climbed and commitment announcements have picked up as the summer recruiting calendar approaches.
NC Football News’ consensus rankings combine evaluations from 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN into one composite snapshot of how national recruiting services view North Carolina’s 2027 class. In all, 53 in-state prospects are ranked by at least one of the three services and make the latest consensus list.
Here are the biggest takeaways from the May update:
Very top of the board remains strong and steady
As mentioned above, the top four players in our consensus list remain unchanged from our early March update:
- Cornerback Joshua Dobson (Hough HS)
- Tight end Jaxon Dollar (East Lincoln HS)
- Cornerback Xavier Hasan (Cardinal Gibbons)
- Edge rusher Rashad Streets (Millbrook HS)
The only subtle change is that Dobson is no longer ranked No. 1 in all three recruiting services as he was in March. Dollar, who committed to Georgia on April 30, has moved into the top spot in 247Sports’ rankings, with Dobson – who is still uncommitted – staying No. 1 with ESPN and Rivals.
Streets also has announced his commitment since our last rankings were released. The 6-4, 230-pounder, who recorded 39.5 tackles-for-loss last season, pledged to Oregon.
Hasan committed to Notre Dame back in December.
Dobson has kept the recruiting world buzzing this spring, changing his mind on taking an official visit to LSU in mid-June. The Tigers and new coach Lane Kiffin had been considered one of his leaders. Instead, he added Michigan to a visit list that also includes Auburn, Texas A&M and South Carolina.
“Dobson … could be a Day 1 starter for Michigan next season,” Trent Knoop from Sports Illustrated wrote on May 23. “Losing four starters, Michigan will rely on some younger talent, and Dobson is a five-star for a reason.”
Moving on up: Aroson Randle Jr. and Xavier Perkins
The biggest riser in the top 10 is Garner linebacker Aroson Randle Jr. He jumped up three spots to No. 5 in our consensus rankings. Randle announced a commitment to the Miami Hurricanes on May 21.
The biggest climber overall is Jordan defensive lineman Xavier Perkins. The 6-2, 240-pound edge rusher from Durham moved up 10 spots to No. 16 overall. His recruiting heated up over the spring, and Perkins ended up with more than 20 offers before settling on Virginia Tech earlier this month.
Millbrook safety Cairo Williams moved up three slots to No. 22. Williams is still uncommitted.
New names rework the bottom half of the board
There are several players who dropped multiple spots between March and May. A lot of that has to do with new players being evaluated and jumping into 247Sports and Rivals rankings for the first time.
Harrells Christian defensive lineman Amir Moore debuts in our consensus rankings at No. 26. Grimsley offensive tackle Gavin Milton jumps in at No. 28. Here are the rest of the newcomers to our consensus rankings:
- No. 37 – Hough offensive tackle Moreno Fisher
- T-No. 38 – Providence Day safety Moses Poku Kankam
- No. 41 – West Forsyth wide receiver Jailyn Moore
- No. 43 – Dudley safety Saimair Horton
- T-No. 46 – Hough offensive lineman Nori White
- T-No. 48 – Providence Day offensive lineman Cooper Hodson.
Providence Day is everywhere
Reigning independent schools state champion Providence Day has solid representation up and down the rankings.
The Chargers have seven players in our 53-man list, headed by safety Robert Geathers III at No. 21. Defensive lineman Griff Galloway, who is ranked 27th, recently committed to Kentucky. Teammate Moses Poku-Kankam, a safety who is tied for 38th, pledged for Rutgers in early May.
Other Providence Day players include athlete Caleb Cooper (T-33rd), wide receiver Steele Fletcher (T-44th), offensive lineman Cooper Hodson (T-48th) and safety Brennan Drummond (T-51st). Fletcher has committed to Wake Forest.
Providence Day under coach Chad Grier has developed into more than just an elite program in the NCISAA. The Chargers have built a legitimate Division I pipeline, and college coaches and recruiting services have taken notice.
Rolesville places four players inside top 20
Providence Day has the most players overall in our rankings. Rolesville has the most in the top 20. The Rams have four prospects between 11-17:
- No. 11 – safety Marquis Bryant (Kentucky commit)
- No. 12 – edge Jayden Broadie
- No. 15 – wideout Anthony Roberts (Virginia Tech commit)
- No. 17 – running back Amir Brown (Nebraska commit)
Other schools with at least four prospects in our consensus rankings include Millbrook (4) and Hough (4).
In-state schools continue to face uphill climb for top prospects
Commitment announcements have picked up since our March rankings release.
Ten players from our top 20 now have made verbal pledges, along with 19 out of the total list of 53.
Of the recent commitments, none have been to in-state college programs. Only one prospect from the top 25 has committed to a North Carolina team – Reagan edge rusher King Kalama, who picked Duke back in December. Kalama is ranked No. 25.
It has always been tough for schools like NC State, UNC, Duke and Wake Forest to keep a bulk of the elite players within our state’s borders. But it seems fewer and fewer from the very top of the board have been staying home in recent years. The 2027 class is continuing that trend.
