North Carolina College Football Game Today: App State Looks to Bounce Back at Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina was just starting to get football rolling around the time Appalachian State was winning its three Division I-AA (FCS) national championships in the mid-2000s.

Now partners in the Sun Belt Conference, App State-Coastal has emerged as one of the region’s most anticipated G6 rivalries.

The 13th meeting between the Mountaineers and Chanticleers will take place tonight (Friday) at Brooks Stadium in Conway, SC. Appalachian State had the upper hand in the series during the early years, but Coastal Carolina has won the past four meetings.

There is more at stake than just bragging rights. The winner gets a key East Division victory, while the loser will be saddled with two defeats in the standings heading into the heart of the Sun Belt schedule.

One storyline to watch will be the status of Appalachian State quarterback Malachi Singleton. He was listed as a “game time decision” on the injury and availability report from the Sun Belt Conference, released Friday morning. Singleton, who has thrown for 1,278 yards and seven touchdowns through five games, suffered an apparent ankle injury last Saturday against Old Dominion.

  • App State could be the toughest secondary Bailey has faced thus far. The Mountaineers have intercepted eight passes, tops in the Sun Belt and sixth nationally. Six different players have made picks. Defensive lineman Caleb Sandstrom has five sacks, while linebacker Alex Mitchll has forced two fumbles.
  • Coastal also has majored in creating turnovers this season. The Chanticleers lead the conference with 13 takeaways (six interceptions, seven fumbles). Coastal turned Marshall over six times.
