2026 Recruiting Snapshot: 44 of North Carolina’s Top 50 Prospects Already Committed

Notre Dame, South Carolina lead with four commits each; UNC, NCSU, ECU and Duke have three each

A list of 247Sports' top five North Carolina high school football recruits from the class of 2026.
Most of North Carolina's top 50 high school football prospects (per 247Sports rankings) have already committed. None from the top five chose an in-state program.

With a month to go before the North Carolina high school football season kicks off, recruiting decisions are moving faster than ever. According to 247Sports rankings, 44 of the top 50 high school football players in North Carolina’s Class of 2026 have already announced their college commitments.

That’s an eye-popping figure for July — and a sign that the recruiting calendar continues to accelerate.

📌 Only Six Uncommitted Prospects Remain

Out of the 50 players ranked by 247Sports (as of July 27, 2025), there are only six who remain undecided:

  • Ben Boulware (DL, Oak Grove – #18)
  • Damaad Lewis (DL, Myers Park – #19)
  • Andrew Rogers (EDGE, Grimsley – #22)
  • Marcus Monroe (ATH, North Raleigh Christian – #40)
  • Jackson Debe (QB, Providence – #41)
  • Braylon Peebles (CB, Cardinal Gibbons – #48)

All six players are considered three-star prospects, according to 247Sports and all six have multiple Division I offers.

🚨 Big Wins for Out-of-State Powers

Elite out-of-state programs, especially those from the SEC and Big Ten (as well as Notre Dame) continue to dominate North Carolina’s recruiting landscape — especially three schools with this cycle:

  • Notre Dame: 4 commits
  • South Carolina: 4 commits
  • Clemson: 3 commits

In fact, among the top 20 prospects in 247Sports rankings, those three programs have combined to land nine of the top 20 players in the state:

  • Notre Dame (Coach Marcus Freeman): Rodney Dunham (#2), Thomas Davis Jr. (#11), Ebenezer Ewetade (#15)
  • South Carolina (Coach Shane Beamer): Aiden Harris (#5), Noah Clark (#8), Andrew Harris (#20)
  • Clemson (Coach Dabo Swinney): Leo Delaney (#6), Keshawn Stancil (#13), Gordon Sellars (#17)

South Carolina picked up its fourth pledge from the Old North State over the weekend when Kosci Barnes (Grimsley, #30) announced for the Gamecocks.

🏠 North Carolina Programs Struggling to Land Top 2026 Prospects

Only two of the top 20 players in North Carolina are staying in-state, and both are headed to Chapel Hill:

  • Trashawn Ruffin (#12) – North Carolina
  • Zavion Griffin-Hayes (#16) – North Carolina

Add in NC State, Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina and Appalachian State, and North Carolina’s FBS programs account for just 14 of the top 50 commits (28 percent).

That’s not nothing — but it underscores how competitive the national recruiting landscape has become in the Old North State when nearly two-thirds of the top rising seniors have eyes elsewhere.

📍 Charlotte, Triad, Triangle All Have Strong Footprint

While Charlotte has an edge in volume, all three major metro regions in our state – Queen City, Triad, Triangle, feature elite-level talent.

  • Myers Park (Charlotte) and Grimsley (Greensboro) lead the state with four top-50 players each.
  • Rolesville, a one stoplight town in Wake County with no high school a generation ago, features three top-50 players. All three commits have pledged to the ACC: two to UNC and one to Louisville.
  • Weddington (Matthews) also has three top-50 prospects.

⏳ Final Thoughts

North Carolina’s top talent from the Class of 2026 has been flying off recruiting boards this spring and summer — and in-state programs are facing stiff competition to keep elite players close to home.

For now, it’s the bluebloods of the SEC, ACC and Big Ten, as well as Notre Dame, making the most noise. But with a long road ahead before National Signing Day, there’s still time for home-state schools to make their pitch to the top remaining talent as well as the deeper pool of D1-level prospects in our state.
