The final college football weekend of September saw another North Carolina D2 program upset a nationally ranked opponent (Well done, UNC Pembroke).
D2 football, in general, has been strong suit in the Old North State this season. The three teams with the best overall records in North Carolina (4-1) – Catawba, Johnson C. Smith and the aforementioned UNCP Braves – all reside in the D2 ranks. Wingate, Mars Hill and Livingstone each sit at 3-1. (Read more about Week 5 in D2 action).
Now, it’s on to the first weekend of October games and a full Week 6 slate. D2 will once again see some huge matchups (in what they technically refer to as Week 5): Mars Hill will travel to Catawba in a battle for early SAC supremacy. Winston-Salem State will host reigning CIAA champion Virginia Union. Lenoir-Rhyne will be the latest North Carolina team looking to fell Valdosta State (1-2 against NC so far this season).
Elsewhere in North Carolina college football, teams are turning their attention to conference action, with only a smattering of non-league showdowns.
The FBS ranks will see two West Coast vs. East Coast matchups: Appalachian State will host Oregon State, while Duke will play an ACC After Dark game (10:30 p.m. start) at Cal. UNC will host Clemson in a Palmetto vs. Tar Heel state clash. Charlotte plays a Friday night game at South Florida.
In FCS football, surging Elon visits Towson in a key CAA Clash. Western Carolina, fresh of a wild win at Campbell, kicks off SoCon play at Wofford, and Gardner-Webb hosts Charleston Southern for BBQ Bowl bragging rights. All five of our state’s D3 teams are on the road, including the Methodist Monarchs, who picked up their first win on Saturday.
