✅ North Carolina FCS Wrap-Up
Overall it was a rough day for North Carolina’s FCS contingent as our teams posted a collective 1-4 record. Here are takeaways:
🏆 Biggest Win of the Day
Well, there was only one win today from a North Carolina FCS team: Western Carolina’s 45-38 triumph at The Citadel. And it was big. The Catamounts won for the fifth time in a row, drawing even with Mercer at 4-0 in the Southern Conference standings.
The Catamounts trailed much of the first half, 7-0, 14-7 and 17-14. Markel Townsend’s 7-yard touchdown run with 1:56 left in the opening half gave WCU the lead for keeps (21-17). Western Carolina stretched its advantage to 14 points on multiple occasions before The Citadel scored late for the final margin.
WCU heads into a bye week to close out the month, then it’s a four-game race for the SoCon title. The Catamounts play at Chattanooga on Nov. 1, then host Mercer the following week.
💪 Standout Performance
We’re starting to sound like a broken record, but WCU quarterback Taron Dickens belongs in this spot again. Dickens completed 28-of-33 passes for 369 yards and five touchdowns. Malik Knight and James Tyre proved Dickens favorite targets. Both enjoyed 100+ yard receiving days.
