The number of undefeated college football teams residing in the state of North Carolina trimmed down from nine to six over the weekend. Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest all improved to 3-0 in the FBS ranks. Barton and Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 3-0 in Division II action, while D2 Mars Hill upped its record to 2-0.
Catawba suffered its first loss at the hands of Mars Hill, while North Carolina Central (FCS) lost at UCLA and Guilford (Division III) fell at Huntingdon (Alab.).
A few more facts from the weekend:
- 16 of the state’s 35 teams won games
- Four games involved two North Carolina teams playing each other, guaranteeing one would lose
- 11 NC teams are still seeking their first victory heading into week four. All are 0-3.
- St. Andrews had a bye this weekend
- Five teams won for the first time: Louisburg College, Elon, Davidson, Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State
