Wide receiver Brevin Caldwell, a two-time All-CIAA selection and two-time HBCU All-American for Johnson C. Smith, announced Monday that he has entered the transfer portal.
Caldwell played in the opener for JCSU this fall — catching eight passes for 94 yards against Morehouse — before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Caldwell leaves Johnson C. Smith as one of the most decorated offensive players ever to wear the blue and gold.
From Charlotte, Caldwell rewrote the school record book during his standout 2024 campaign, becoming the first 1,000-yard receiver in Johnson C. Smith history with 85 receptions for 1,090 yards and eight touchdowns. He holds program records for most catches in a season, most receiving yards in a season, and most receptions in a game (15).

Caldwell has totaled more than 2,500 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns during his career, earning AFCA All-Region honors and a spot on the prestigious D2Football.com Elite 100 list after 2024. He also entered 2025 as one of the top returning wideouts in Division II football, ranked among the national leaders in several categories. He was preseason All-CIAA and made the preseason HBCU All-American team from BOXTOROW.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Caldwell thanked the university for shaping him on and off the field.
“My time here has been nothing short of transformational,” Caldwell wrote. “From the classroom to the field, JCSU has taught me discipline, accountability and purpose. Being a part of a program built on culture, brotherhood and perseverance has truly molded me into who I am today.”
“Beyond the stats and milestones, it’s the legacy, the lessons and the people that have made this journey special. JCSU gave me a platform to lead, to inspire and to grow.”
Caldwell starred locally at Ardrey Kell High School after beginning his prep career at Independence High. His decision does not affect JCSU’s preparations for Saturday’s playoff opener against visiting Frostburg State. The contest kicks off at 1 p.m. in Charlotte.
