The second season of the Bill Belichick era at North Carolina will open an ocean away from Chapel Hill.
UNC and TCU will meet in the 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday, Aug. 29 in Dublin, Ireland – roughly one year after the two programs opened the 2025 season against each other on Labor Day Monday at Kenan Stadium.
That 2025 opener began with plenty of optimism for the Tar Heels. UNC marched 83 yards on its first drive and grabbed an early lead thanks to a Caleb Hood touchdown. But the night – and much of the season – unraveled from there as TCU rolled to a 48-14 victory and North Carolina limped to a turbulent 4-8 finish in Belichick’s debut.
Now, the programs will meet again on an international stage as both teams attempt to forge new identities amid significant roster turnover in the off-season.

Previewing the Matchup
UNC enters 2026 facing plenty of questions after a disappointing first season under Belichick. The Tar Heels struggled for consistency on both sides of the ball during a 4-8 campaign, and the off-season featured another major roster overhaul through high school recruiting and the transfer portal.
To Belichick’s credit, North Carolina responded aggressively on the recruiting trail. The Tar Heels signed a nationally ranked recruiting class (22nd per 247Sports) and added several notable transfers, including quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. (Wisconsin/Maryland), edge rusher Jaylen Harvey (Penn State) and tight end Jelani Thurman (Ohio State).
UNC also hired veteran Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator in hopes of jump-starting an attack that stagnated in 2025. Petrino’s arrival should bring a more competent offense, provided a rebuilt front line comes together and the quarterback situation gets figured out.
Unlike many major programs, North Carolina kept a relatively low public profile during spring practice. The Tar Heels did not hold a traditional spring game and limited media access, adding even more mystery entering Belichick’s second season.
TCU enters the matchup after a far more successful 2025 campaign. The Horned Frogs finished 9-4 and beat USC in a 30-27 overtime thriller in the Alamo Bowl. However, TCU also faces significant roster turnover after losing quarterback Josh Hoover to Indiana and multiple starters from last year’s team.
Harvard transfer Jaden Craig is expected to compete for the starting quarterback role as the Horned Frogs install a new offensive scheme under coordinator Gordon Sammis. While at UConn, Sammis directed an offense that averaged 35 points and 445 yards per contest.
TCU’s defense is led by its backfield, including safety Jamel Johnson and cornerback Vernon Glover. National pundits see TCU as a legitimate Big 12 title contender, so this will be a tough opener for the second year in a row for Belichick and the Heels.
🔍 Why This Game Matters
While preseason expectations around UNC remain tempered, the opener against TCU offers an enormous opportunity for Belichick’s program to reshape the narrative entering Year 2.
North Carolina has spent much of the offseason flying under the radar nationally. Most national pundits rank the Tar Heels near the bottom of the ACC, citing heavy roster turnover and uncertainty at quarterback.
Still, the pieces are in place for improvement if the revamped offense develops quickly under Petrino and the transfer additions settle into key roles.
A strong showing against a proven Big 12 opponent on an international stage, even if the game isn’t won, would immediately change the conversation surrounding UNC football after a mostly forgettable 2025.
🌎 Why Ireland?
College football in Ireland dates back to 1988 when Boston College beat Army in a mid-November contest billed as the Emerald Isle Classic.
The 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic marks the fifth consecutive year that the college football season has kicked off with a Week 0 matchup in Ireland.
The 2026 matchup between UNC and TCU continues college football’s growing international push and gives the ACC another high-profile global stage entering the new season. Georgia Tech beat Florida State in the 2024 classic.
