Week 5 Observations (Sept. 25-27)

No More Unbeaten Teams

Wingate game into Week 5 as the last remaining unbeaten North Carolina college football team. But the Bulldogs fell 21-14 to Carson-Newman in a rematch of last November’s SAC title game. This year conference championship isn’t out of reach by any means, but Wingate doesn’t have much more room for error – and may need help down the stretch to retain its trophy.

North Carolina is D2 Strong

Three teams now share the best record in NC college football at 4-1 – Catawba, Johnson C. Smith and UNC Pembroke. All three schools play at the NCAA Division II level. North Carolina Central (FCS) is the only other school with four wins; the Eagles improved to 4-2 with a win at East Texas A&M on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, three NC teams have 3-1 marks. Again, all three are from the D2 ranks – Livingstone, Mars Hill and Wingate. UNC Pembroke has the longest active winning streak of four games in a row.

Methodist Ends Nine-Game Losing Skid

Methodist stuffed a two-point conversion attempt in the final seconds and held on to beat Apprentice 20-19 on Saturday. The victory gave the Monarchs their first win since last September and ended a nine-game skid.

There are only two North Carolina teams left without a win this season: Barton and Elizabeth City State.

Week 4 Observations (Sept. 18-20)

🏆 Wingate the Last Unbeaten

Through four weeks, Wingate (3-0) stands alone as North Carolina’s only unbeaten college football team. The Bulldogs have leaned on a stingy defense and efficient offense, and their win over UVA Wise keeps them in control of early SAC storylines.

📉 Only Three Winless Teams

At the other end, just three programs remain winless: Barton (0-4), Elizabeth City State (0-4), and Methodist (0-2). Barton’s skid has now stretched to six games dating back to last season, while ECSU is still searching for its first breakthrough under new leadership.

⚖️ 13 Teams Above .500

A total of 13 North Carolina teams are above .500, but the balance could be better. Catawba (3-1) and UNC Pembroke (3-1) have positioned themselves well in Division II, while NC Central (3-2) carries the banner for the FCS after a rout of NC A&T.

🔥 Streaks That Matter

Wingate and UNC Pembroke both carry three-game win streaks, while NC Central, Livingstone, Brevard, Louisburg, and Mars Hill have stacked back-to-back wins. On the flip side, Methodist has lost nine straight dating back to 2023, the state’s longest drought.

Week 3 Observations (Sept. 11-13)

And there was much rejoicing in Greensboro. North Carolina A&T and Guilford, holders of the longest active losing streaks in our state heading into Week 3, both put those streaks to rest. The Aggies ended a 12-game slide with a 33-30 win over Hampton in double overtime. Guilford clipped Methodist 42-40 to halt an eight-game skid.

Meanwhile, three teams lead the way in the longest active winning streak category: NC State, North Carolina Wesleyan and Johnson C. Smith each have three wins in a row following victories in Week 3.

How long will these winning streaks last? JCSU started last season 8-0. Let’s hope multiple teams can ride the winning wave for a long time.

Week 2 Observations (Sept. 4-6)

And then there were seven. We started the North Carolina college football season with 33 in-state programs full of optimism and big dreams.

After just two full weeks of play, only seven boast unscathed records. Appalachian State, NC State, Wake Forest and Johnson C. Smith improved to 2-0 with wins on Saturday. North Carolina Wesleyan and Greensboro opened with a ‘W’ in their D3 openers. Wingate had the week off after beating UNC Pembroke over Labor Day weekend.

It bears repeating – winning is hard, and right now the 33 college programs in our state boast an overall record of 23-35, a winning percentage of just .397. Meh.

To be fair, six of our FCS teams have taken lumps against FBS opponents in these early weeks. And Elizabeth City State, a D2 school, played “up” against FCS Hampton on Saturday (and nearly pulled the upset). But still, collectively our teams need to – and hopefully will – do better as the calendar goes deeper into September and October.

Week 1 Observations (Aug. 28-Sept. 1, 2025)

Here’s a sobering reality: North Carolina has 33 college football programs. Twenty-seven of them have played games. Already, 18 teams have a loss. Eighteen! Only 10 teams have tasted victory – nine are 1-0, while NCCU is 1-1.

If your team picked up a ‘W’ in August, be thankful. Winning is hard.

Week 1 action wiped out every active winning streak in the state – including UNC Pembroke and Elon, which closed the 2024 campaign with four wins in a row.

Heading into Week 2, only Catawba has an actual active winning streak – two in a row after Saturday’s beatdown of Ferrum and last year’s 47-15 victory in its finale vs. Tusculum.

We’ll say it again: winning is hard.
