Elizabeth City State will get an early jump on the 2024 football season.
The Vikings will be among the few Division II teams in our state playing in a “Week 0” contest. The Vikes go to Shaw on Saturday, Aug. 31 (over Labor Day weekend) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
Elizabeth City State and Shaw both play in the CIAA, but this game will not count in the league standings. The teams met a year ago, with the Bears surviving a furious second-half comeback from ECSU to prevail 20-17.
The Vikings will face a former CIAA foe in week two, hosting Chowan on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in the friendly confines of Roebuck Stadium. Chowan left the CIAA after the 2022 campaign and is playing in the Gulf South for two seasons before joining Conference Carolinas for football in ’25.
The final non-conference game comes Sept. 14 at Erskine.
From there, the calendar will feature all CIAA foes. ECSU will play three in a row on the road: at Fayetteville State (Sept. 21), Livingstone (Oct. 5) and Virginia Union (Oct. 12), followed by three games at home: Virginia State (Oct. 19), Lincoln (Oct. 26) and Bowie State (Nov. 2).
The season finale will be at Bluefield State on Nov. 9. The CIAA title game is set for Nov. 16 in Salem, Va.
Elizabeth City State is coming off a 3-7 campaign, 2-6 in the CIAA. The Vikings won their season finale, 38-20 over Bluefield State. Other wins came against Virginia State and St. Augustine’s.
