BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell dug an early hole and couldn’t climb all the way back out, falling to Stony Brook 24-17 in its 2024 home opener Saturday night in front of more than 4,000 fans.

The Camels, which upset nationally ranked Western Carolina a few weeks ago, now drop to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in CAA play, while the Seawolves improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Stony Brook’s Roland Dempster led the charge for the visitors, rushing for 179 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns. The Seawolves capitalized early with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, ending with Dempster’s first score. They quickly extended the lead to 14-0 after recovering a Campbell fumble on the ensuing kickoff, followed by another Dempster touchdown.

Campbell responded with a pair of touchdowns, both courtesy of Aiden Valdez. His first came in the second quarter on a five-yard pass from Mike Chandler II, and his second—a 37-yard reception from Chad Mascoe, Jr.—brought Campbell within a touchdown early in the third quarter, 21-14.

Stony Brook controlled the clock throughout, holding a 36:39 to 23:21 time-of-possession advantage. The Seawolves were also highly efficient on third down, converting 12 of 21 opportunities. Campbell’s defense struggled to get off the field, allowing Stony Brook to extend drives and maintain control of the game flow.

The teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter, but Campbell’s 30-yard field goal by Connor Lytton with 31 seconds remaining wasn’t enough to complete the comeback, as Stony Brook recovered the onside kick to secure the win.
