👀 Previewing the Matchup

This matchup carries a little extra intrigue after the teams met in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division II playoffs. Virginia Union dominated the trenches that afternoon in Richmond, piling up 345 rushing yards in a convincing 44-12 victory.

The Panthers unleashed one of Division II football’s most dynamic backfield tandems. Jada Byers rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Curtis Allen added 132 yards and two more scores. Lenoir-Rhyne, meanwhile, managed just 54 rushing yards and saw its season end with a 10-3 record.

Both programs enter 2026 looking much different. Byers exhausted his eligibility after 2024, and Allen took the mantle all the way to the 2025 Harlon Hill Award ceremony, winning the prestigious D2 football honor after a season that included 2,409 rushing yards and 30 TDs. But he is gone as well.

Lenoir-Rhyne must rebuild an offense that lost starting quarterback Khamoni Robinson (Toledo), backup quarterback Amari Yelding (Tuskegee), wide receiver Zion Agnew (Old Dominion) and running back Zayvion Turner-Knox (Prairie View A&M) to the transfer portal among others.

Despite those departures, expectations remain high for both programs. Virginia Union has reached the Division II playoffs in four consecutive seasons, winning CIAA championships in 2023 and 2024 before finishing as the league runner-up in 2025. Lenoir-Rhyne, meanwhile, has posted a 16-8 record in two seasons under head coach Doug Socha and is looking to return to the postseason after missing the playoffs a year ago.

The Friday night season opener also serves as “828 Day” in Hickory, with Lenoir-Rhyne celebrating the region’s area code and the date during its first of six home games. The Bears were originally scheduled to face West Florida before the Argonauts announced they would move to the FCS ranks for the 2026 season, opening the door for another meeting with one of Division II’s premier programs.

🔍 Why This Game Matters

With South Atlantic Conference teams playing nine league games, Lenoir-Rhyne won’t have many opportunities to build an at-large playoff résumé before conference play begins. The Bears missed the playoffs in 2025 after reaching the postseason in each of the previous two seasons, creating an early opportunity to make a statement against one of Division II’s premier programs.

Virginia Union enters the season with similar aspirations after four consecutive playoff appearances and a runner-up finish in the CIAA last fall. The Panthers have become one of the nation’s most consistent Division II programs, making this a significant early test for both teams.

This contest has all the makings of a playoff-caliber matchup on a Friday night in late August.
